Memorial Day: Some new events added, one long time tradition will be missing

By Bruce Rolfe

There will be three new additions to the Climax Memorial Day event schedule, one long time tradition that will be missing, and many returning favorites.

One new attraction will be a vintage base ball game between the Continental Base Ball Club of Kalamazoo against a group of C-S Panthers of all ages at 11:30 a.m. at the C-S girls varsity softball field behind the C-S Intermediate School.

Visitors won’t want to miss a noon performance by the Northern Lights Drum & Bugle Corps at the C-S football field.

Another new addition will be a performance by the C-S High School Jazz Band at 12:30 p.m. at the C-S Football Field.

There will be one void that has been a part of Memorial Day for many years.

The Climax Rotary Club will not be selling brats and hot dogs this year.

A Climax Rotarian told the Climax Crescent the local Rotary Club will not be participating this year due to competition from other food vendors that were invited.

The first mention of the Climax Rotary Club participating on Memorial Day selling food items was in 1969. The May 23, 1969 Climax Crescent reports the local Rotary Club sponsored a chicken barbecue as part of the C-S Invitational Baseball Tournament co-sponsored by the Rotary Club and C-S Athletic Department. The Memorial Day chicken barbecue continued during the baseball invitational in 1970.

The June 2, 1989 Climax Crescent notes the Climax Rotary Club participated in Memorial Day/Founders Day with a food tent. The local Rotary Club has continued that tradition since, with the exception of 2020 when Memorial Day ceremonies were cancelled because of COVID.

The Climax United Methodist Church will be holding its annual pancake breakfast at the Fellowship Hall, 133 E. Maple St. from 7:30 to 9 a.m.

The 30th Run To Climax 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk and Run To Climax 7K Run/Walk will begin at 8 a.m. near the corner of Church and Maple Street.

The Memorial Day parade, sponsored by Climax-Scotts American Legion Post #465, will begin at 10 a.m. A wreath laying ceremony will be held after the parade in the Climax Village Park.  Sgt Aaron Scott Valentine (retired) will be the speaker.

Taps and another ceremony will be held in Prairie Home Cemetery later at 1 p.m.

All activities following the parade will take place near and at the Intermediate School.

The Sunset Cruisers Car Show will begin at 9 a.m. at the Intermediate School and will continue until 2 p.m. when the awards presentation will be held.

A craft and vendor show will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Intermediate School as well.
