The Climax Village Council approved one ordinance and moved one step closer to considering another one for approval at its regular meeting June 3.
The Council approved an ordinance to establish a Planning Commission by a 5-2 vote (Joline Chaney and Janet Sutherland voted no) and completed a required second reading of an ordinance to appoint a Village of Climax Ordinance Enforcement Officer.
The Council will consider the enforcement officer ordinance at the June 17 meeting.
Climax Village Council Bill Lewis said if the Council approves the proposed ordinance to appoint an ordinance enforcement officer at its next meeting, the village attorney will likely be contacted to offer a recommendation on selecting the ordinance enforcement officer.
Lewis said the Council previously did not have an ordinance enforcement officer appointed.
He said Safe Built, which performs code enforcement services for the Village, can perform zoning and ordinance enforcement as part of an agreement with the village.
The village attorney also said the Council may appoint any person the council wishes to be designated as a village ordinance enforcement officer.
The Council approved the Planning Commission ordinance that was written and reviewed earlier without modification.
Some highlights include:
• The Village of Climax Planning Commission will have five members including one member who is also a member of the Village Council and referred to as the “ex-officio” member.
• All Planning Commission members will be qualified electors of the Village of Climax; except one member may be appointed who is not a qualified elector of the Village but who is a qualified elector of another local unit of government.
• Members of the Planning Commission will be appointed for three year terms, except the ex-officio member whose term on the Planning Commission shall expire with his or her term on the
Village Council.
Part Time DPW Employee Hired; Full Time DPW Employee Will Soon Be Needed
While the Climax Village Council hired a part time Department of Public Works employee, the Council learned there has been a resignation and a full time DPW employee will be needed in July.
Lewis said Jeff Oswalt was hired as the part time DPW employee at a starting hourly rate of $16. Oswalt will be on an 180-day probationary period. He said after the 180-day probationary period the hourly pay rate will be reviewed.
Full time DPW employee Forrest Cope has submitted a letter of resignation to pursue another career opportunity. His last day will be July 24.
Applications are available on the Village of Climax website, www.villageofclimax.org. Residents can also call the Village Hall if they have any questions, 269-746-4174. Village Hall office hours are Monday and Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m.
Grant For Local Road Improvements Will Be Pursued
The Village Council is in the process of applying for a state grant for local street improvements. Lewis said the $93,750 grant would be a 50 percent match leaving the Village responsible to pay $46,875. The deadline was June 11.
The Village president said if the grant is approved, the Council hopes to perform road improvement projects on all roads in the Maple Terrrace plat.
