Panther Baseball Team Derailed In Quarterfinals

Most high school baseball coaches will tell you when it gets to the postseason, pitching and defense will be the key.

Both were the case Tuesday in Centreville’s 3-0 win over Climax-Scotts in the Division 4 quarterfinals at C.O. Brown Stadium.

The Panthers finish the season with a 27-7 record, while Centreville (28-2) will play in today’s semifinals at Michigan State University.

Centreville’s Michael Kool tossed a no-hitter to improve to 10-0.

While Kool was flourishing on the mound, it was two errors by C-S in the third inning that factored into a three-run inning for Centreville.

Kool, who entered the game with a 0.70 ERA, lived up to his stinginess, striking out seven and issuing two walks.

C-S Was Determined To Get Into Regional Championship Game

It is easy to point to Climax-Scotts’ 3-1 win over Concord in the regional championship game Saturday at Morenci as the crowning moment of the day for the Panthers.

On paper, it was.

But had it not been for a refuse to lose effort against Morenci in the seventh inning of the regional semifinal game when the Panthers were three outs away from having their season end,
there would not have been any regional championship game celebration.

C-S walked out of the regional semifinal game with a 9-3 win after an impressive seventh inning of hard work.

The makeup of this team truly emerged in the seventh inning when it looked grim after Morenci scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

But between some impressive senior leadership, timely hitting and Morenci coming unraveled, the Panthers pushed seven runs across and held the Bulldogs scoreless in the bottom of the
seventh for the win.

Ceremony Gives C-S Seniors Opportunity To Thank Scholarship Donor

Francis Max Smith openly admits the Climax-Scotts School District has a special place in his heart.

While the money he has generously donated the last three years is administered through the Kalamazoo Foundation for a fund that awards scholarships to students in the County, Smith’s original goal was for C-S seniors to be awarded scholarships through the Rex and Ken Forgotten Heroes Pride of Scotts Scholarship Fund he created.

The four C-S 2015 scholarship recipients had an opportunity to visit and thank Smith at a special ceremony June 3 at the Pride of Scotts.

The recipients are Chase Audette, Lisa Dunham, Amanda Hopkins, and Hunter Sleeman.

They each received $1,250.00 from the scholarship fund.

The Climax Horse Shoe Club heid a meeting at the Crescent Office, Saturday evening and reorganized for the season.

S. W. Clark was elected President of the Club and Paul Smith, secretary and Treasurer. The membership fee of 50¢ each was decided upon and the club started out again this year stronger than ever. The new grounds which are being contributed by Burton Snow at the rear of his garage has added much interest and enthusiasm to the players. A lot of work has been contributed in grading and leveling the ground and four truck loads of gravel have been hauled in putting three courts in the very best of condition. The club now has shoes and courts to accommodate 12 players at a time. If you are not now a member better see Sid Clark or Paul Smith and have them add your name to the list.

Scotts is coming over Saturday after noon to play the Climax Horse Shoe Players and everyone is invited to be on hand.

Base Ball - Climax

The Climax Ball Team gave a good account of themselves last Sunday when they defeated the fast A.B. Stove team 16 to 9 on the Postum Athletic Field, Battle Creek. The game was free from errors on both sides for the number of scores, but was featured by heavy hitting in safe territory. The boys made a fine showing and are fast getting back into that old form. Don Budson did the pitching for Climax with Bull Durham behind the bat. A. B. Stove used three pitchers during the game but was unable to curb the heavy hitting of the Climax sluggers.
