An assault incident involving a victim who was stabbed by what the Kalamazoo County Sheriff Department said resembled an ice pick, followed by the suspect dying at the scene, left residents in the Village of Climax in shock June 20.
The Kalamazoo County Sherff’s Office was dispatched to the 200 block of South Main Street in the Village of Climax just after 1 p.m. for a report of an active assault in progress.
One male subject was treated at the scene and according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff Department the suspect suffered a medical emergency and died at the scene.
Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Michelle Greenlee said the deceased suspect is Marc Anthony Cochran.
Cochran attended Climax-Scotts Community Schools but transferred to Galesburg-Augusta High School where he was a 2009 graduate.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department states the suspect began assaulting a concrete crew with his vehicle and an object resembling an ice pick.
Longtime Climax resident Denise Pyle, who lives near the location the incident took place at on South Main Street, said a loud noise she heard prompted her and her husband to go to the front of their house to see what caused the noise.
What she witnessed next was frightening.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff Department said in a news release deputies learned a concrete crew was working at a nearby residence when the incident occurred.
Pyle said she saw a vehicle strike a utility truck that was parked on the west side of South Main Street. Pyle said she saw the driver strike the utility truck a second time.
Pyle said she then saw what she guessed were two teenage aged boys running near a house in the area. She said the male suspect then drove the vehicle over the curb and into the yard next to the house, and attempted to run the two boys over.
“The only thing that protected those boys was there is a big cement laundry line and the suspect hit it and the front end of the car wrapped around it,” said Pyle, who is also a Climax Village Council trustee.
The long time Village of Climax resident said the suspect then got out of the vehicle and started chasing the two boys.
Pyle said another male who was assisting with the concrete work quickly came to the scene, attempting to protect the two boys.
She said the other male was stabbed in the forehead with what she said was an ice pick “at least four different times.”
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff Department release said the suspect was physically restrained by individuals on scene while awaiting the arrival of law enforcement and emergency medical personnel.
Pyle said it took four men to subdue the suspect.
“They finally got some duct tape to get him subdued and his hands behind his back,” said Pyle
Pyle said the suspect’s body then appeared to be motionless.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff release said while being restrained, the suspect suffered a medical emergency. Life-saving efforts were initiated immediately by bystanders and continued by first responders upon arrival.
“Once he was subdued they rolled him over and started administering CPR,” said Pyle who guessed CPR was administered for at least 30 minutes.
The assault incident took place approximately eight months after a murder occurred in the Village, which Pyle said is disturbing.
“Something like this happening so close to that (the murder), small town America is not immune. We all need to be worried. We all need to be aware. We all need to take care of each other and be more of a community. That’s how we keep each other safe,” said Pyle, who has lived in Climax her entire life.
The incident remains under active investigation by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.
