C-S, Athens Alumni Football Game Scrapped Due To Lack Of Participation Numbers For Second Straight Year

A lack of participation numbers has forced the organizer of a Climax-Scotts High School alumni football game against Athens July 25 to cancel the event.

C-S event organizer Trent Piper said earlier this week he had 12 players committed and felt confident counting all the players that have showed up to three practices, he could have a roster approaching 20 players by the July 25 game. But because all of the players did not consistently show up at the same time at three practices that have been held and there was a concern the remaining two practices would draw smaller numbers, the game was cancelled.

Alumni from the two school districts were scheduled to clash at Athens High School as part of Athens’ Homecoming weekend.

Climax Village Council Considers Website, Hardware Enhancements

It was a night to consider future enhancements to village property, technological improvements at the Village Hall and a meeting to approve new policies and an ordinance Tuesday for the Climax Village Council.

After reviewing previous estimates from two companies for web site development/hosting services and hardware improvements and additions at its June 2 meeting, the Council focused on the company that offered the lowest estimate at Tuesday’s meeting and appears to be close to making a decision.

Revised estimates from Gigahertz Unlimited, LLC of Climax that discloses profit for both proposals, totals $7,174. Gigahertz Unlimited, LLC is owned by Village Council Trustee Robert Bailey, who has already constructed a basic Village web site at no cost to the Village.

Village President Terry Strong contacted the Village attorney about potential conflict of interest. Strong said the attorney noted it boils down to Bailey had to disclose the profit, the profit is not substantial for personal gain and the benefit to the community outweighs the benefit to him.

To offer the online billing option through the Village’s web site and support the upgrades, the Village would have to upgrade some of its hardware.

Gigahertz Unlimited, LLC provided an updated estimate to build the Village’s web site that would allow the Council to offer online water bill and tax payment options similar to what BS&A software could provide, web site hosting services, and maintenance at a cost of $2,124, which Gigahertz states in its new estimate Tuesday that $1,649.01 is profit. Bailey said the profit line basically covers overhead. The estimate also includes a $1,560.00 discount.

Many Applications Received For Elementary Principal Position; C-S Board Elects Officers

Although this is the time of year when thoughts of vacations, a little extra rest and time away from work traditionally take place, the Climax-Scotts Board of Education continues to hammer away at issues that need to be in place before the beginning of the new school year.

C-S Superintendent of Schools Dr. Geoffrey Balkam informed the board at Monday evening’s board of education meeting that his office received 16 applications by the posted deadline for the elementary principal position.

Balkam said the Screening and Interviewing Committee met Tuesday morning to review the applications. The C-S superintendent noted interviews are tentatively scheduled to begin next week and possibly continue into the following week.

The void was created when Wendy French accepted an elementary principal’s position in the Portage School District.

The board also elected officers for the new year. Eric Hiscock was elected board president, Judy Longman was elected vice president, and Sharalyn Davis, was elected Secretary/Treasurer.

The board also welcomed newly elected members Jeff Longman and Chuck Betz and established its meeting schedule for the next year.

Travis Wade Earns 18th Save

Climax-Scotts High School graduate Travis Wade picked up his 18th save recently and continues to shine on the mound for the Kissimmee Cobras, the Class A affiliate of the Houston Astros in the Florida State League.

After six days of inactivity, including two consecutive rainouts, Wade saw action again July 9, picking up his 18th save of the season in Kissimmee’s 7-6 win over Clearwater in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Cobras won the second game also, 6-4. Wade pitched the final inning, facing five batters. He gave up two earned runs, five hits, walked one and struck out two.

With an off day on July 11, Wade’s numbers through Tuesday show him with a 4-1 record, 18 saves and a 0.74 earned run average. In 38 games worked, Wade has pitched 48.2 innings, allowed 36 hits, four earned runs, two home runs, walked 10 batters (two intentionally) and struck out 51 batters.

Black Sox Defeat Climax 4 to 2

The Climax Merchants baseball team was defeated 4 to 2 last Sunday night when they met the Black Sox, a very strong colored team from Grand Rapids. It was certainly a pleasure to watch these two teams battle it out for nine innings. The Black Sox team is one of the best that has played at our local stadium. Robinson, Black Sox hurler, was mighty tough in the pinches and held the strong Climax batters to 5 hits, as he fanned 18.

Ed Rossi pitched a very effective game for Climax. He allowed 13 hits, but was able to pitch himself out of trouble a number of times as he fanned 12.

The Sox proved to be powerful hitters and displayed considerable skill in the art of baseball. The Sox scored in the first inning on 3 successive singles. The score stood 1 to 0 until the 4th when Climax scored two runs on singles by Crowell, Eberstein and Dalton. A wild pitch by Robinson helped the cause. Climax led 2 to 1 until the 7th when the Black Sox pushed one across on a walk and a double to tie the score at 2 all. The Sox then came back in the 8th and scored the winning run on a double, single and a costly Climax error. They added one more in the ninth for good measure.

Base Ball - Climax

The game Saturday the Fourth between the Climax Regulars and the Climax Masons was witnessed by a good attendance of enthusiastic fans and full of pep and excitement from start to finish. The regulars came out victorious by a score of 5 to 3, but had to scratch gravel every inch of the road and several times their lead seemed to be in danger when the Masonic batters failed to produce with the bases nearly full. Both pitchers were working good. Scramlin pitched an exceptionally good game.
Reed the fast shortstop, starred with his hitting, and base running. Repke presented a stone wall at second, scooping everything, while Harlow played a good game and added several specialty features.

Battery: Regulars Nessel and Latta
Masons: Pierce and Scramlin

WEST CHARLESTON

Several members of the Charleston Improvement Club together with their families and friends spent a most enjoyable 4th at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Buckhout.

The lawn and trees were decorated with bunting and small flags and Old Glory, blazed forth her colors in honor of the day.

The weather was ideal, and the picnic tables prettily decorated and set beneath the shade of a long row ot maple trees, were well spread with tempting viands to which all did ample justice at the noon hour.

The dinner hour was opened by singing the last verse of “America” which bespoke the feeling in the hearts of every true American.

A splendid program arranged by Mrs. Fanne Simpson provided entertainment for the afternoon.

Opening Song, The Star Spangled Banner
Piano Solo, Star of the East, Mrs Becker
Vocal Solo, Dreams of Childhood Days, Merlin Durrin
Mrs. Becker at the Piano.
Piano Solo Hazel Bradley
Vocal Solo: a. Enough to Know   b. Hard Trials
Ferris Bradley, Hazel Bradley accompanying.

After the musical program, games and stunts afforded the guests much amusement.

Among these were a centipede and kangaroo race, fat and lean woman’s race, throwing contest etc. In these, the young became younger and the older ones forgot rheumatic joints.

Appropriate prizes were given the lucky winners, Mrs. Buckhout receiving the honors in the throwing contest. Another feature of the day which was very appropriate for the occasion, was the review of the Camp Custer Calvary which passed that way.

The day passed all too quickly for the guests who declared Mr. and Mrs. Buckhout royal entertainers.

There were over 100 present and it was a pleasure to have with them for this occasion an honor guest, Mr. Wilson Bradley, a civil war veteran. Mr. Bradley is the father of Mr. Lowell Bradley.
