Detroit juvenile to be arraigned as an adult on charges related to fatal vehicle crash

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido announced Wednesday that a 16-year-old juvenile will be arraigned this week as an adult on charges in connection with a fatal vehicle crash that occurred last Saturday.?

A preliminary hearing was held in the Macomb County Juvenile Court on Monday at which time a special adjournment was granted so that authorities could determine how to proceed with the case.

After carefully examining all the available evidence including the severity of the allegations, Lucido said he decided to charge the 16-year-old as an adult.

Clinton Township law enforcement responded to a call Saturday at an apartment complex. Upon arrival, Lucido said officers observed a vehicle driving slowly through the area with its headlights and taillights turned off. When officers attempted a traffic stop using lights and sirens, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed.

It is further alleged that the fleeing vehicle ultimately collided with another vehicle, resulting in a fatal crash.

The driver and sole occupant of the suspect vehicle was identified as a 16-year-old Detroit resident. The driver of the second vehicle, 28-year-old Alex Habib of Madison Heights, sustained severe injuries and died at Henry Ford St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office will provide additional details after the arraignment.
