GA man to be arraigned for allegedly scamming victim of more than $50,000

Prosecutor Peter Lucido announced Tuesday that 25-year-old Kelly Angel Umana of Georgia waived his right to a preliminary exam and will be arraigned on a charge of False Pretenses, a 15-year felony, in the Macomb County Circuit Court on Monday, August 4.

It is alleged that, on or about Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, Umana posed as Social Security Administration worker to fraudulently induce a Shelby Township woman to transfer over $50,000 to his bank account.

During an investigation, Lucido said, Umana was discovered to be in Georgia. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney John Paul Hunt worked with Georgia law enforcement to extradite Umana and bring him to Michigan to face charges.

"My office is committed to ensuring that individuals who prey on others for personal gain are held fully accountable," Lucido said. "Thanks to the efforts of law enforcement across state lines, the defendant has been successfully extradited to face justice for allegedly defrauding a woman of more than $50,000."
