From The August 4, 2000 Climax CrescentC-S School District, Suspended Volleyball Coach Come To Agreement; New Elementary Principal Hired
After nearly five months of investigation, attorney involvement, some unrest, rumors and speculation in the community, the personnel issue surrounding Climax-Scotts varsity volleyball coach Tim Bannister appears to be over.
Bannister, who was suspended by the district March 1 for allegations the district would not make public because it was a personnel issue, had requested a public hearing that was scheduled for August 1, but that public hearing was cancelled after Bannister and his attorney, C-S Superintendent of Schools Dr. Geoffrey Balkam and the district's attorney finally came to an agreement earlier this week that will allow Bannister to remain on board as a coach.
The board of education passed a resolution to accept the agreement at a special meeting Wednesday evening by a 5-1 margin, with one board member absent. After going into closed session for nearly 45 minutes to review the compromise the school district and its attorney and Bannister and his attorney, Milt Greenman, agreed on, the board voted on the resolution. The lone no vote came from board member Jim Swarthout who stated, “I’m not supporting the resolution because the sanctions are a bit too harsh.”
The board also carried a motion to hire Jan Lee as the new elementary principal at its special meeting Wednesday by a 6-0 vote.

Congratulation For 20 Years Service In Climax Telephone Co. Office
Congratulations are extended to Mrs. Austin Collar (Maxine) of 148 S. Church St., for completing 20 years service with the Climax Telephone Co.
Maxine went to work for the Telephone Co. in May of 1955 when the office was still in the old building, so she has been with them through much progress. The one change she missed was the change to the dial system that went into effect on January 30, 1954.
Since that time their office was temporarily located in the house part of Sinclairs Store while the old building was being torn down and the present building constructed; the extended long distance service of being able to dial anywhere in the States without operator assistance; the latest improvement to the community of the toll free service to Scotts, Galesburg, Kalamazoo and Battle Creek; and the companies growth to 1,000 phones in service.

From The July 31, 1925 Climax CrescentAugusta Farmer Turns Hills Into Good Farm
Between the watersheds of the Kalamazoo and St. Joseph Rivers there is a line of hills where the glacier, in playful mood thousands of years ago, indulged in strange pranks. It piled up ridges and scooped out hollows in freakish abandon. It left the land so rough that when Kalamazoo County. was settled these hills were considered almost worthless and were the last to be taken.
But the hills have met their master at last. He is Leslie J. Bradley, a man with a square jaw and steel blue eyes who isn't satisfied to do things the easy way.
It was 12 years ago that Mr. Bradley decided that his mission in life was to show how these hills ought to be farmed. His inspiration came while he was working as a hired hand on one of the slopes he now owns.
