Poultry Ban Brings Disappointment For Local 4-Hers,
But Learning Process Continues

With the Michigan Department of Agriculture canceling all 2015 poultry and waterfowl exhibitions in Michigan because of the midwest’s current bout with HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza), the impact will be felt by many local 4-H students who will not be able to show their poultry and water fowl at the Kalamazoo County Fair August 10-15.

Disappointment surrounded the 4-H community when local 4-H students who had planned on showing poultry at the Kalamazoo County Fair, learned about the state mandate in June.

Movie In The Park Yields Positive Feedback

Overwhelming positive feedback combined with a turnout of approximately 100 people at last Saturday’s movie in the park event in the Climax Village Park has prompted organizers from the Revitalize Climax group to schedule a second event August 15, and hopefully a third.

Controlled House Burn Brings Valuable Experience
To Local Fire Departments

Structure fires can be some of the most dangerous situations a firefighter can face, making training extremely important if a firefighter is confronted with that scenario.

But replicating what can take place in an actual structure fire can be difficult in a classroom instruction setting or training exercise at a fire station.

That’s why when members of the Climax, Leroy, Athens and Newton Township fire departments had the opportunity to participate in a controlled burn involving a vacant house and barn last Sunday on K Drive east of ½-Mile Road in Leroy Township, firefighters had a little extra anticipation for the training session.

Collins, White, Strong Receive Nod In Contested Climax Twp.
Primary Races; Road Millage Passes

Just over 20 percent of the active registered voters in Climax Township cast ballots to approve a road millage renewal, while a much smaller number voted in the township office races in the August 8 Primary Election.

While 21.59% of the 1709 active registered voters cast ballots for the road millage proposal, which passed by a 205-163 margin, 14.9% was the highest total of voters that voted for any of the township board position candidates.

Jim Collins received the nod in the Climax Township supervisor race, edging current township board trustee Rosemary Semonski, 203-148.

Curtis White, with 217 votes, and current board treasurer, Monique Strong, with 168 votes, were winners in the primary election for the two township board trustee positions open. Sharon Eldred, also running for a trustee seat, received 156 votes.

Danna Perrin, with 248 votes, and Connie Hunter, with 256 votes, were both running unopposed for the clerk and treasurer’s positions respectively.

Climax Township Firefighter Delivers Baby In Home With No Electricity;
Scott Smith Labeled A Hero By Father Of Newborn Child

It was a scene right out of a western classic. There’s no electric power; a mother goes into labor in her home, miles away from a hospital. There’s only her and her husband.

Instead of a doctor riding to the scene with a black bag on a white horse, Scott Smith, of the Climax Township Fire Department came to the rescue with flashing lights on a truck to the home of Chris and Laurie Audette of Climax early Monday morning, delivering the couple’s second child right in their home.

Smith, a Climax Township firefighter 12 years, delivered an 8 pound, 1 ounce, 21-inch healthy baby girl 4:40 a.m. Monday morning at the Audette home. To make matters worse, Smith, who was later joined by other members of the Climax Township Fire Dept., had to deliver the baby girl without any electric power after a storm whipped through the area earlier in the evening, knocking out power to a portion of Climax.

Not Many Saw Bush, But Local Residents Thrilled
Presidential Candidate Came Through Climax

Although there were only a small number of people who were able to catch a glimpse of Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush as his Victory 2000 Express train entourage came through Climax Saturday, many of the spectators that lined the two railroad crossings in Climax were just happy a potential president came through town.

After a first train came through and dropped off a packet of Bush-Cheney signs, the audience of approximately 75 that lined the tracks near both crossings eagerly clutched the signs, waiting for Bush’s arrival.

Not being a scheduled stop or possibly not knowing it was approaching a village, the Bush train understandably approached the Main Street crossing in Climax at a pretty good clip as it headed towards its next stop in Schoolcraft after a visit in Battle Creek.

Bystanders encouraged the train engineer to slow down, but when the last train car whizzed by the Main Street crossing there was no Bush or vice president candidate Dick Cheney visible. The train did slow down coming to a crawl as it went by the Maple Street crossing in Climax.

Viewers at the Maple Street crossing said Bush did come to the last car and wave shortly after it went by.

The Climax Merchants Baseball team came through Wednesday night to defeat the Ramona Bears for the 2nd straight time this season. The score was 10 to 3, the same as when Climax defeated the Bears two weeks ago. Eddie Rossi starred on the mound for Climax as he held the heavy hitting Bears to 4 hits. Rossi also showed power at the plate as he banged out a double and a single in three trips, driving in 4 runs. Phil Crowell made a good showing with 3 singles in 5 times.

The Bears took an early lead when Rossi lost his control and they made 3 runs in the 2nd inning on 2 hits, 2 walks, and a wild pitch. The Bears held their lead until Climax tied it up in the 4th. Climax then scored at will during the rest of the game.
