Kimble Center for Legal Drafting provides free power-of-attorney forms

Two free, fillable power-of-attorney forms prepared by the Kimble Center for Legal Drafting at Cooley Law School are now available for download on the State of Michigan’s Elder Abuse Task Force’s website, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced on Thursday, Aug. 7.

“These forms will help people exercise their rights and protect themselves and their family members from potential abuse or exploitation,” said Attorney General Nessel. “We are grateful to the Kimble Center for Legal Drafting for making them accessible to the public.”

The user-friendly, award-winning forms make it easier for Michigan residents and their family members to appoint a trusted individual to make important financial and medical decisions on their behalf if they become unable to do so. These are the forms:

 • Financial Power of Attorney

• Medical Power of Attorney

In 2024, the Elder Abuse Task Force successfully advocated for legislation that updated Michigan’s Power of Attorney statute under the Uniform Power of Attorney Act. While the law includes a statutory form, it was not initially downloadable or fillable. The Financial Power of Attorney provided by the Kimble Center for Legal Drafting is fully compliant with the new statute.

The Kimble Center’s mission is to produce and make available — to attorneys and consumers — legal documents that are clear and easily understandable, documents unlike anything that the public is used to seeing from attorneys. More information about the Kimble Center is available at www.cooley.edu/academics/kimble-center-writing.
