Code enforcement contract reviewed by Village Council

By Bruce Rolfe

The Climax Village Council faced a light agenda at its regular meeting August 5, however a few noteworthy items were reviewed.

With the contract approaching for Safebuilt, the company the Village uses for Building Code and Ordinance Enforcement services, Village Council President Bill Lewis wanted the Council to be aware of some options.

The council will consider hiring Safebuilt again or consider other companies.

Finance/Insurance/Administration Chairperson Denise Pyle said she would like to have her committee meet to discuss any concerns they may have with the Safebuilt contract that expires in October, as well as seek additional bids and offer the opportunity for representatives from other companies to explain services their company offers to the Council.

Tree Maintenance

Finance/Insurance/Administration Chairperson Denise Pyle would like the council to consider using a standard bidding process when the Council pays for tree maintenance and removal services.

Discussion will continue at a future meeting.

Public Safety/Fire/Law Enforcement/Disaster Planning

Public Safety/Fire/Law Enforcement/Disaster Planning Chairman Nick Ludwig said he reached out to Kalamazoo County Sheriff Captain Logan Bishop about a contract extension for direct patrol in the Village. The contract extension offered by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff Department would run to June, 2026. However it was noted the Village only has enough funds in the current budget for direct patrol services through March 31, 2026. Bishop told Ludwig the contract can be cancelled by either party with 90 days notice and he will cancel the contract as of March 31, 2026.

Ludwig distributed the Kalamazoo County Sheriff Department’s July calls for service log for Climax Township. There were 14 citizen initiated calls. Three of the citizen initiated calls were for assault.

There were 16 officer initiated calls, including 15 that were directed patrol and one warrant service call.

• The Village-wide Fall Cleanup will be October 4 for Best Way customers only.
