Library board won’t pursue another millage in November

By Bruce Rolfe

After a .85 mill, 12-year proposal for $1,610,000 in improvements at the Galesburg-Charleston Memorial District Library in the August 5 election was defeated by a 63.80% - 36.20% margin, the Library Board decided at a special meeting August 11 not to pursue another millage proposal in the November 4 election.

However, Galesburg-Charleston District Library Director Helena Hayes said the library board plans to re-address the proposal at the library board’s regular meeting August 19.
Ballot language needed to be submitted to the Kalamazoo County Clerk and Register of Deeds by August 12 to be placed on the November 4 election.

The August 5 proposal was defeated 363-206.

A breakdown of the vote totals shows the margin of defeat was by more then 2-to-1 in Charleston Township, where there were 266 no votes compared to 131 yes votes.

The margin was much closer in the City of Galesburg precinct where the proposal was defeated 97-75.

The bond proposal was for capital improvements in the library, addressing outdated items, provide enhancements and improvements, upgrade areas to meet current code, and provide needs that will benefit patrons for years into the future.
