Nature Discovery bringing luna moths to library

The Galesburg Charleston Memorial District Library is excited to welcome Jim McGrath from the Nature Discovery Center to the library on Wednesday, August 26, at 6:30 p.m. for an encore presentation about the native Michigan luna moth.

The luna, a beautiful member of the giant silk moth family, is a native Michigan species whose wild population is in decline. Following an informative PowerPoint presentation, “The Luna Moth’s Life Cycle & Ecology,” each adult/couple/family in attendance will receive a few young larvae to take home and raise.

McGrath is passionate about sharing his knowledge of the natural world with others.  “This is an opportunity to help the declining wild population of the native luna moth, while also experiencing an intimate connection to its life cycle. All you need is access to walnut or hickory tree leaves.”

The larvae (caterpillars) will spin cocoons before the end of September. When the new lunas emerge in the spring, they will be released into the wild, where they can breed and start the cycle all over.
