C-S football team is young
but has strong work habits
Head Coach: Tyler Langs, 4th season
Last Year: 8-2 overall/5-0 SCAA Conference champions, 2nd straight year
By Bruce Rolfe
With 11 seniors who compiled a 32-9 record and five playoff games over the course of four years depart from last year’s 8-2 team, the 2025 edition of the Climax-Scotts varsity football team will have a younger makeup.
The Panthers opened the new season August 28 at Gobles and will continue the season September 5 at Potterville.
The departure of quarterback Logan Gilbert, running backs Luke Lawrence and Jackson Bagwell, wide receiver and defensive back Chase VanMiddlesworth and offensive and defensive lineman Sam Bleeker will be big shoes to fill.
Lawrence rushed for an 8-man career rushing school record 3854 yards. His 61 career rushing touchdowns is also a school record for 8-man football at C-S.
C-S coach Tyler Langs said junior Maddox Wyman and sophomore Alex Wurtzel will be sharing the quarterback role, replacing a very talented Logan Gilbert.
Langs adds senior Liam LaSala and junior Eli Bowron will be running the ball this year in place of Bagwell and Lawrence.
“We are very young as a team. But we have a great group of kids that have worked really hard in the off-season and are ready to fill some of the roles of those seniors from last year,” said Langs, entering his fourth year as the Panther varsity head coach.
Langs does have some starters returning at a handful of positions.
Liam LaSala will return as a starter at outside linebacker, his twin brother senior Hunter Lasala will return as a starter as tight end, junior Maddox Wyman will return as a starter at defensive back and junior Cole Birkham will return as a starter on the offensive line.
The Panther coach said with a younger roster and different makeup, the team will likely run more of the traditional C-S offense geared more towards the running game.
“We want to be good at running the ball again like we have been in the past,” explained Langs.
C-S will be vying for a third straight SCAA conference championship but Langs feels two familiar rivals, Mendon and Pittsford, will be top challengers for the conference championship.
After defeating the Hornets 46-44 in week No. 8 last year, Mendon ended C-S’ season with a playoff opening 58-50 win over the Panthers.
Mendon finished 10-2 last season and advanced to the 8-man semifinals where they lost to Deckerville. 49-32
C-S defeated Pittsford 63-14 last year but Langs feels the Wildcats have a good squad this season.
After the September 12 road game at Potterville, C-S will enjoy four straight home games including homecoming September 26 against Battle Creek St. Philip. The other home games are September 12 (Adrian Lenawee Christian), September 19 (Colon) and October 3 (Athens).
The Panthers conclude the season with road games at Bellevue, Mendon and Pittsford.
