Second half comeback
‘Something to build on’ for C-S
By Bruce Rolfe
While the first half in a 54-32 loss to Gobles August 28 in the season opener at Gobles was dotted with mistakes that contributed to a large first half deficit, the Climax-Scotts varsity football team is looking at a strong second half effort as a good building block entering a September 5 road game at Potterville.
C-S faced a 40-8 halftime deficit however an 88-yard scamper by junior Eli Bowron followed by a two-point conversion by Dane Sattler pulled C-S to within 48-32 with 11:45 left in the fourth quarter and the comeback chatter began.
Bowron’s long touchdown run clearly boosted enthusiasm levels and the defense fed off the big play by coming up with a strong series of its own.
While Gobles moved to the C-S 23-yard line, a penalty pushed the ball back to the Panther 28-yard line. A one yard loss on a run and a quarterback sack for a loss of another 16 yards forced the home team to punt.

C-S got the ball with 5:06 left in the fourth quarter and a chance to pull to within one touchdown. However C-S turned the ball over on downs on a fourth and 14 play moments later, giving the Tigers the ball back with 2:31 left in the game, ending the Panther comeback bid.
Gobles scored another touchdown with 34.3 seconds left however the two-point attempt was unsuccessful for the final score.
C-S coach Tyler Langs felt the confidence levels started to grow in the second half when success came early and a little more regularly.
“I think it goes back to those young kids, without the experience. That first half was their experience and they did a great job coming out in the second half. We were one stop away from making it a two-score game. We were right there, I was super proud of them,” said Langs.
The second half comeback started when Panther quarterback Maddox Wyman darted to the left side of the field and scored from three yards out with 7:41 left in the third quarter. Liam LaSala ran in the two-point conversion, pulling C-S to within 40-16.
The Tigers came right back, scoring on a eight-yard touchdown run by Case Lord with 4:35 left in the stanza (Lord also ran in the two-point conversion) for a 48-16 lead.
C-S responded quickly, as Maddox scored on the first play from scrimmage when he found a nice hole and outran the Gobles defenders for a 65-yard touchdown run with 4:21 left in the third quarter. Dane Sattler ran in the two-point conversion, pulling C-S to within 48-24 after three quarters.
The C-S defense stiffened, forcing the home team to punt late in the third quarter, and the motivated Panthers got back into the game with Bowron’s 88-yard touchdown run and Sattler’s two-point conversion run that pulled C-S to within 48-32.
Langs told his team after the game there are definitely some areas the team needs to improve on but he also let them know the second half effort was encouraging.
“We’re really young. We lost a lot of strong seniors last year so we’ve got a lot of young kids. Inexperienced kids trying to fill spots. For the second half we just said, can you get better then you were in the first half? Because obviously, we didn’t play well in the first half. And they did. They did a phenomenal job. They did exactly what we asked them to do. Took care of their business. I told them, that’s things we can build off of. It’s a long season and we can build off the second half. It was a great experience for all those young kids. Gobles is a really good football team. Our second half, I was proud of them,” said the Panther coach.
The fourth year C-S head coach feels a lot of the improvement going into the September 5 road contest at Potterville can be mentally, especially for the younger players who experienced certain situations at Gobles for the first time.
“For a young kid, we get in there and bullets are flying and we lose our mind. We forget our assignment, we forget where we need to be. If we can just slow the game down a little bit and do the things we need to do. A lot of mental things. I think physically we stayed in there. The kids played hard. Mentally, we just need to stick in there a little bit better and slow ourselves down, and we’ll be just fine,” observed Langs.
Gobles enjoyed big yardage gains consistently while shutting down the Panther offense often in the first quarter.
Aiden Beam broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown run just 1:54 into the game (Ray scored the two-point conversion), Ray struck from 17 yards out on a run with 5:37 left in the first quarter (Ray ran in the two-point conversion). The Tiger senior found another big hole and motored 53 yards for a touchdown with 1:58 left in the opening frame. Steven Juarez completed a pass to Beam on the two-point conversion, sending the Tigers into the second quarter with a 24-0 lead.
The Panthers were able to move down to the Tiger 10-yard line early in the second quarter, however an interception by Gobles with 10:25 left ended that threat.
The Tigers then marched 80 yards on 13 plays and scored on a one-yard plunge by Case Lord with 3:43 left in the first half (Lord ran in the two-point conversion).
An Alex Wurtzel to Hunter LaSala pass play that covered 47 yards got C-S on the scoreboard with 2:18 left in the second quarter. Wurtzel ran in the two-point conversion, slicing Gobles’ lead to 32-8.
Gobles delivered a big blow however just over one minute later when Beam hauled in a 10-yard pass with 37.7 seconds left followed by a two-point conversion for a 40-8 halftime cushion.
C-S totaled 403 yards including 298 yards on the ground.
Junior Elijah Bowron led the C-S ground game with 161 yards on 14 carries and one rushing touchdown. He added 10 tackles, including 7 solo tackles.
Tyler Wyman finished 2-for-4 passing for 58 yards and one interception. He added 9 carries for 104 yards and two rushing touchdowns offensively. He added 9 tackles, including 4 solo tackles defensively.
Hunter LaSala added 2 catches for 67 yards and one touchdown, and 3 tackles, including 1 solo and 1 quarterback sack.
Liam LaSala contributed 9 tackles including 6 solo tackles.
