G-A volleyball team starts season strong
The Galesburg-Augusta varsity volleyball team started the new season impressively by downing Comstock in three games August 26 on the road, 25-12, 30-28, 25-21
G-A coach Jonica Klimp felt her team communicated well and moved the ball well.
She adds because Comstock is a developing team, dig and block opportunities for her team were limited and a lack of attacks prevented G-A’s defensive specialists from seeing much action.
The Lady Ram coach was disappointed a majority of Comstock’s points came off of errors her team made.
“Missed serves and missed third ball opportunities were abundant,” said Klimp.
The G-A coach said playing in a close game in the second set allowed her team to play under pressure, “which is always great to encounter early in the season.”
Klimp adds foreign Exchange student, Wende Trines came out swinging in her first game in the United States, totaling seven kills while having the highest hitting percentage on the team at .462%. She also led the team in aces with four.
Klimp notes junior outside hitter Lily Gilbert did a great job closing points with 13 kills, Lexi Coburn had an impressive varsity debut with 26 assists and Grace Gibson had an all around strong performance, totaling eight kills, seven digs and two blocks.

G-A JV football team drops opener
The Galesburg-Augusta JV football team suffered a 20-8 loss to Homer August 27 in the season opener at Maskill Field.
G-A coach Les Brewer felt despite giving up 20 points, the Ram defense did a good job, with the visitors taking advantage of good field position from a handful of G-A turnovers.
Brewer said Aiden Maine had at least six sacks and multiple quarter back hits and tackles for a loss.
J.J. Bailey threw a touchdown pass to Connor Welker for 30 yards.
The Rams are scheduled to play at Allegan September 11.

G-A wins opener at Cassopolis 62-20;
four school records established
By Dale Martin
The visiting Rams scored on six of their seven first half possessions to build up a 42 -12 halftime lead and never looked back in a 62-20 win over Cassopolis August 28 on the road in a game where four G-A School records were set.
Jonah Ranes capped a 58 yard drive with a touchdown from the 2 yard line. Giovanni Evans ran in from the 4 yard line to finish a 48 yard drive. Justin Martin raced 50 yards to score for the Rams giving the visitors a 20-0 first quarter lead.
Evans’ 25 yard run built the lead to 28-0 midway through the second quarter highlighted a 97 yard drive by the Rams.
The Rangers got their first score of the game when Jayden Pratt hit pay dirt from the 3 yard line. The score was set up by a 42 yard pass from Lucas Williams to Pratt.
G-A wasted little time, using just under two minutes to drive 67 yards in 4 plays with Martin getting the score on a 47 yard run.
Cassopolis countered with Williams connecting with Pratt on a 42 yard bomb cutting the Rams lead to 34-12 with 2:13 to play in the half.
A 20 yard return of the ensuing kickoff by Martin set the Rams up at midfield. The G-A scoring drive took just a minute and a half with Martin shredding the Rangers defense on a 35 yard touchdown run, sending the teams into halftime with G-A holding a 42-12 lead.
In the second half the Rams had three possessions and scored on all three of them. Martin scored twice from 13 and 7 yards and Evans finished the scoring for G-A with a 25 yard run.
Cassopolis squeezed in a score between Martin’s touchdowns when Williams teamed up with Pratt on a 33 yard pass play.
G-A finished the game with 609 yards total offense, the most by a G-A team since 1970 when the Rams amassed 713 total yards against Mattawan in a 70-14 win. The 563 rushing yards collected by the offense breaks the school record of 449 yards also held by the 1970 team against Mattawan.
Justin Martin rushed for 224 yards on 13 carries. Jonah Ranes had 205 yards on 21 carries and Giovanni Evans finished with 107 yards on 12 carries. This marks the first time in Ram history that three players gained over 100 yards in the same game and also the first time in Rams history that two players rushed for more than 200 yards in the same game. Martin also had 77 yards in return yardage giving him 301 all purpose yards, a new school record. Ranes caught two passes for 46 yards giving him a total of 251 all purpose yards.
The 62-point output was also the first time G-A has scored more then 60 points in a season opener and in a game since the 1990 team began the new campaign with a 61-13 win over Union City. According to Michigan-football.com, the 62-point outburst is the most points G-A has scored in a game since a 70-14 win over Mattawan in 1970.
Dominic Corsi led the defense with 9 tackles. Ranes, Martin and Cayden Allie had 6 tackles each. Jackson Houseman recovered a fumble and Dontrell Bowden intercepted a pass for the Rams.
Next up for G-A is a matchup between the Rams and the Trojans of Plainwell on September 5th at Maskill Stadium. A big crowd is expected as the G-A community will be honoring former Ram coach Bill Maskill with the unveiling of his statue before the game a 6 p.m.
