Man sentenced for group home killing

Fifty-five-year-old Mark Joseph Newsome was sentenced last week after he pleaded no contest to manslaughter for the killing of Dale Francis Mitchell, 72, at a group home in Roseville last year.

Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Richard L. Caretti sentenced Newsome to 5-15 years in prison for manslaughter. He is to have no contact with the victim’s family. He received 581 days credit for time served.

Newsome was originally charged with second-degree murder. At the time of his jury trial, he pled no contest to manslaughter, and the second-degree murder charge was dismissed.

His 5–15-year sentence was part of the plea agreement.

On Jan. 31, 2024, Newsome and Mitchell got into a physical confrontation at a group home in Roseville which they shared with other roommates.

One of their roommates witnessed the fight and called Roseville police.

Upon arrival, the authorities found Mitchell on the floor, bleeding and bruised in an unconscious condition as a result of being beaten by Newsome. Efforts to revive Mitchell were unsuccessful.
