The Safe Gun Storage Saves Lives program is specifically directed toward parents, guardians, and students in middle and high school, with the goal of educating firearm owners about the legal requirements of safe gun storage, its relationship to youth violence and suicide, and the consequences that may arise from unsecured firearms.
The campaign launches during National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and preventing self-harm, especially among youth.
To kick off the campaign, the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office plans a Telephone Town Hall on Thursday. Sept. 11, hosted by Lucido and Dennis Liegghio, a nationally recognized suicide prevention advocate.
Liegghio’s non-profit organization, KnowResolve, is dedicated to promoting mental health and preventing youth suicide through outreach, advocacy and education. Anyone who is suffering the loss of a loved one through suicide or may be contemplating self-harm is encouraged to call and participate in this event.
?
Additionally, Lucido recommends and invites firearm owners to participate as he believes they should know Michigan’s safe storage requirements and the consequences that can follow from failure to follow the law. Individuals can register on the Prosecutor’s Office website to ensure they receive a call and can participate in the conversation.
