Rams rebound with 37-7 win over Allegan

By Dale Martin

The Galesburg-Augusta varsity football team scored on all four of its first half possessions to build a 30-0 lead at halftime over the visiting Tigers of Allegan and went on to post a 37-7 win September 12 at Maskill Field.

Allegan drove to the Rams 35 yard line on its first drive but was forced to attempt a 52 yard field goal. Myles Jackson’s attempt fell short and the Rams took possession at their own 20.

Justin Martin’s 9 yard touchdown run capped an 80 yard, 11 play drive and Patrick Armock ran in the two point conversion giving G-A an 8-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Rams’ second possession was a 7 play drive covering 62 yards with Jonah Ranes scoring from the 2 yard line. A key play in the drive was a 29 yard Armock completion to CJ Bernard on fourth down to keep the drive alive.

The Ram defense held the Tigers to a three and out. A short punt gave the ball back to the Rams on their own 38 yard line. Seven plays and 62 yards later Ranes scored his second touchdown on a 9 yard run. Armock and Bernard hooked up on a pass for the conversion and the Ram lead grew to 22-0 with two minutes remaining in the half.

Martin executed a perfect on side kick which he recovered, giving the Rams the ball on the Tigers 48 yard line. A 6 yard run by Martin was followed by a 42 yard  touchdown pass from Armock  to Bernard with one minute left on the clock. Armock ran in for the extra points and the Rams went into halftime with a 30-0 lead.

The teams exchanged possessions in the third quarter before G-A’s final touchdown drive midway through the period.

Evans returned an Allegan punt 16 yards to the Ram 43 yard line. A 13 yard pick up by Martin and back to back runs of 14 and 15 yards by Ranes set up Giovanni Evans for a 7 yard scoring run on the last play of the quarter. Aaron Catlin split the uprights for the point after and G-A held a 37-0 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Allegan finally got on the board when Hauk Henrickson scored on an 8 yard run with 2:49 remaining in the game.

Ranes led the Ram rushing game, picking up 135 yards on 19 carries. Martin added 76 yards on 10 attempts. Armock completed 3 of 6 passes, all of them to Bernard, for 74 yards.

On defense Dominic Corsi had 8 tackles. Colton Robertson made 7 tackles, Evans and Tristan Jackson each had 6 tackles and Ranes finished with 5.

G-A, now 2-1, will travel to Schoolcraft (2-1) for a match-up on September 19. G-A will be attempting to start the season 3-1 for the first time since 1995.

G-A Comes Back to Down Fennville

After a long bus trip and dropping the first two games, the Galesburg-Augusta varsity volleyball team won three straight elimination games to post a win over Fennville in five games September 11.

Fennville won the first two games 25-13, 25-18, however the Lady Rams responded with wins in the next three tilts, 25-17, 25-18, 15-13.

“I’ve seen the struggle with the long bus rides over the years. Unfortunately, with how our conference has shaken out, there are multiple dates where we are on a bus over an hour each way. It takes a set or two for our varsity to get in the mindset of competition. Through level-headedness, pure grit, and stubbornness, the girls were able to outplay Fennville in the end and get the win,” observed G-A coach Jonica Klimp.

G-A, now 4-0, was led by Lily Gilbert’s team high seven aces, 17 kills and four blocks. Charlotte Lockner added 13 digs, and Lexi Coburn had 33 assists.

G-A Takes Bridgman in 3 Sets

The Lady Rams defeated Bridgman in three sets in the home opener September 9 at G-A High School, 25-14, 25-14, 25-14.

G-A coach Jonica Klimp felt consistent, strong serving was a key to the win.

The G-A coach felt BreAnna Keene, who led the team in kills with nine, had a strong match.

“What the numbers don’t show is how well she tracks the ball and defends the court from the net,” offered the Lady Ram coach.

Klimp also felt setter Lexi Coburn, who had 29 assists, once again had a strong match, “making the key plays and setting the right people in the right places.”

Grace Gibson had a team high five aces and eight digs.
