Planned Parenthood of Michigan said it can no longer accept Medicaid reimbursement for treatment after a recent 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision and will be covering the cost of patients until Sept. 22.

President Donald Trump's administration has blocked Medicaid funds from going to Planned Parenthood. The group said 1.1 million patients will be affected nationally and 14,000 in Michigan.

The group is challenging the provision of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, but the 1st Circuit decision allows the provision to take effect.

Planned Parenthood of Michigan said in a release on Friday that it will cover the cost of already-scheduled appointments for Medicaid patients through Sept. 22.

For new patients making appointments, they will have to pay out-of-pocket or find another provider.

"In siding with the Trump administration and blocking access to care while the lawsuit continues to work its way through the courts, the 1st Circuit is jeopardizing the health and well-being of Michiganders and other Planned Parenthood patients nationwide," Planned Parenthood of Michigan CEO Paula Thornton Greear said in a statement. This administration's escalating attacks on Planned Parenthood are designed to score political points with their anti-abortion base, and they don't care who it hurts."

The group said "defunding" Planned Parenthood would mean 25,000 STI services, 40,000 birth control cycles and 2,000 cancer screenings being "lost." This would also result in a cost to taxpayers of $52 million over the next 10 years nationally, Planned Parenthood said.

"Despite the challenges ahead, our priority remains the same: our patients," Greear said. "We will do everything we can to continue serving the people who are relying on us and will never stop fighting for everyone's freedom to get high-quality, affordable care at the trusted provider of their choice, including at Planned Parenthood health centers."
