Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido announced Wednesday that a Detroit man was arraigned on a dozen felony charges including conspiracy, felony firearm, fleeing and eluding and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Lucido said 62-year-old Karl Williams, Sr. engaged in a series of activities last Friday that resulted in 13 criminal charges.
After the theft of a running GMC Acadia in Oak Park, Lucido said Williams robbed a drug store in Southfield, getting away with only cigarettes. After Williams picked up three companions, a plan was made to rob a car wash located on 8 Mile Road in Warren, authorities alleged.
While Williams and his passengers were surveilling the car wash, Warren police, who were looking for the stolen Acadia, saw the vehicle in the car wash parking lot. Several marked police vehicles with activated emergency lights stopped around the Acadia.
Lucido said Williams attempted to drive between two of the police vehicles, striking both of them.
A police officer fired one round which struck one of William’s passengers in the lower back. The Acadia then accelerated towards an officer and Diezel, a K9 unit. The officer was able to avoid being hit but his K9 unit was struck.
The Acadia maneuvered around the patrol units and escaped, speeding down 8 Mile Road at speeds in excess of 100 mph. The police pursued the Acadia which eventually came to a stop when it hit a median while attempting to turn.
All four subjects were taken into custody.
Williams was arraigned in 37th District Court in Warren on the following charges:
Count 1. Conspiracy to Commit Robbery – Armed, a life or any term of years felony
Count 2. Stolen Property - Receiving and Concealing - Motor Vehicle, a 5-year felony
Count 3. Police Officer - Fleeing - Third Degree - Vehicle Code, a 5-year felony
