Close win and loss for G-A volleyball team

After overcoming two injuries to capture a five-set win over Holland Black River September 16, the shorthanded Galesburg-Augusta varsity volleyball team, still without two middle blockers, dropped a match to Kalamazoo Hackett in four games September 18, 20-25, 25-10, 14-25, 16-25.

With BreAnna Keene and Wende Trines still out with ankle injuries, G-A coach Jonica Klimp had to rely on sophomores to fill the sidelined seniors’ roles.

Klimp said Jeni Klimp and Kayla Bortolussi both stepped up and played their roles well.

Bortolussi, a trained middle blocker, did well with four blocks against a tough opponent.

Jeni Klimp, playing the middle blocker position for the first time, was able to secure some key digs and kills for G-A.

The G-A coach adds the Hackett strategy was to keep the ball away from G-A’s Lily Gilbert, however the Ram junior was still able to come up with a team high 17 digs.

“They attacked our right side. Moving forward, we will strengthen the defense on that side of the court, forcing opponents to find new open spaces on the court,” points out Klimp, who said her team will see a rematch against Hackett at the Comstock Tournament October11.

Lady Rams Overcome Injuries To Down Holland Black River

The Galesburg-Augusta varsity volleyball team overcame the loss of two players and a 2-1 deficit by defeating Holland Black River in five games in the first conference match of the season for the Rams.

G-A coach Jonica Klimp said an early injury during warm ups took middle blocker BreAnna Keene out of the lineup.

“We pivoted, and Lily Gilbert stepped up to play middle for us, moving Charlotte Lockner to the outside and Emily Coleman to the right side,” explained Klimp.

In the first game, a 25-16 win for G-A, starter Wende Trines suffered an ankle injury, taking another middle blocker out of the lineup.

The team made adjustments again, moving outside hitter Grace Gibson to the middle and switching Emily Coleman to the outside hitter position.

Holland Black River won the second (21-25) and third (26-28) games, however G-A bounced back to win the final two games (25-12, 15-8).

“The team had to come together to get the job done, with most of the girls playing positions they may have never played. Through scrappiness and determination, the girls got the job done,” adds Klimp.

Cross country teams compete
in two events

While the Galesburg-Augusta high school and middle school cross country teams enjoyed another event to compete in September 20, the Irish Fox and Hound race at Kalamazoo Valley Community College offered a break from the traditional cross country race.

According to the athletic.net website, in the traditional cross-country race, all runners start at the same time and then finish in a stagger with the fastest runners coming in first.  A fox and hound race flips this tradition to provide runners a race that challenges them on a different level.  Runners are lined up and released from the start line by their best performance to date for the season, with the highest seeded runner going first.  Each successive runner is released based on their seed time.  This is a unique style race that puts the athletes in positions they do not otherwise experience, giving them the opportunity to trust their training and run their own race, while inspiring their inner competitor throughout the entire event.  Males and Females raced together, however, awards and scoring was split by gender.

Medals were awarded to the top finishers and a trophy was awarded to the top team (team scores based on top 5 finishers like a standard meet). There was also recognition of top fox (athlete that drops the most time) and top hound (athlete that makes the most passes).

Kalamazoo Hackett, occupying the top four spots, won the mens race with 16 points. G-A and Dowagiac finished next, totaling 56 points each.

Kalamazoo Hackett also won the womens race with 25 points. G-A did not have enough runners to score as a team.

G-A sophomore Ashton Dingee was the first Ram to finish in the mens race, posting a time of 20:29.11 in ninth place.

Freshman Sophia Dohm was the only G-A runner in the womens race. She finished seventh with a time of 23:49.21.

In the 2-mile Middle School race, the G-A boys finished fourth out of five teams that had enough runners to score as a team with 102 points. The G-A girls did not have enough runners to score as a team.

Plainwell won the boys race with 21 points and the girls race with 34 points.

G-A sixth grader Louie Finedell was the first Ram to cross the finish line in the boys race, finishing 13th with a time of 13:47.25.

G-A eighth grader Neva Freed placed 15th with a time of 16:27.73 in the girls middle school race.

Eagles soar over Rams 53-28

By Dale Martin

The Galesburg-Augusta varsity football team started strong but Schoolcraft came racing back to register a 53-28 win over the Rams September 19.

The visiting Rams stopped the host Eagles on their first possession taking over at the Schoolcraft 45 yard line. A 37 yard pass completion from Patrick Armock to Justin Martin gave G-A a first down at the 5 yard line. Jonah Ranes raced into the endzone and then caught a pass from Armock for the point after try and the Rams held an 8-0 lead with 7 minutes remaining in the quarter.

The G-A defense held Schoolcraft to a three and out taking over possession at its own 17 yard line. A 12 play drive stalled and Schoolcraft got the ball back at its own 38 yard line as the first quarter ended.

Having been held to just 6 yards rushing in the first quarter the Eagles went to the air. Quarterback Jack DeVries threw three scoring strikes to Drew Enright of 44, 63 and 35 yards. DeVries finished the quarter with 6 completions for 205 yards and Schoolcraft held a 20-8 lead at halftime.

The third quarter started off badly for the Rams. A partially blocked punt gave the Eagles the ball at G-A 20 yard line. On the first play Devries passed to Landon DeVries for a touchdown. Schoolcraft’s next possession ended with a Beckett Boyes 7 yard touchdown catch from DeVries. Boyes closed out the third quarter with an 8 yard scoring run and the Eagle lead had grown to 39-8.

The Rams fought back in the final period. Giovanni Evans scored on a 9 yard run with Armock adding the point after try on a run.

Kaleb Nishizawa answered for the Eagles with a 1 yard run.

Evans was later hit at the goal line and the ball came loose. Dominic Corsi alertly fell on the ball in the endzone for a Ram score.

Nishizawa scored again for Schoolcraft (now 3-1) on a 5 yard run and Evans countered for the Rams on a 2 yard run as the game ended.

DeVries finished the night for the Eagles 14 of 22 passing for 322 yards. Schoolcraft’s rushing offense that was held to 8 yards in the first half, finished with 229 for the game.

Greg Buckner led the Rams (now 2-2) with 88 yards rushing. Evans gained 62 yards, Armock 53 and Ranes 50. Armock completed 8 of 19 passes for 78 yards with most of the yards coming in the first half.

Corsi led the defense with 10 tackles. Ranes made 9, Evans 8 and Buckner finished with 6.

Lawton (3-1) will travel to G-A for a 7 p.m. game on September 26.
