G-A spikers take Martin in five sets

Still playing shorthanded, the Galesburg-Augusta varsity volleyball team showed resilience with a conference win over Martin in five games September 23 on the road.

Middle blocker BreAnna Keene is still sidelined with an ankle injury, however Wende Trines returned to the court from an injury.

G-A coach Jonica Klimp said the match was competitive from the start.

G-A lost the first set 22-25, but rebounded to win the next two games, 25-19, 25-22. The Rams could not close out the match in the fourth game, falling short 26-24, but won a close fifth and deciding game 15-12.

“We knew the team with fewer errors was going to win the match. Our girls were able to move the ball around to get the attack from different angles, as well as playing defense well against a powerful hitting team,” said Klimp.

Lily Gilbert had a team high 14 kills, Lexi Coburn had a team high 28 assists, Grace Gibson led the team with five aces and 14 digs and Jeni Klimp had three blocks.

G-A took a 2-0 Central Division record into a division home match September 30 against Delton-Kellogg.
