Counselor's Corner: The desire for something deeper

Fred Cavaiani

Everyone desires happiness. Everyone wants to feel loved. Everyone has this longing to feel joy. And this desire for happiness, love, and joy stays with us from birth through death. This desire for something deeper in life is always with us, but when we don’t pay attention to this desire we can easily mistake what will bring us true happiness and love and joy.

It becomes so easy to think that money will bring us happiness or living in a certain place, having the right home, owning the right car. A very common desire everyone has is the belief that happiness will come from being with the right person in a relationship. I was married for 50 years to a wonderful woman and since she died almost two years ago I miss her so profoundly. But I realize even more that my happiness was based on my willingness to be loving and kind to her and to everyone because this helped me to see how wonderful and caring she was and helped me pay attention to looking for love and goodness everywhere.

The desire for something deeper becomes clearer when I understand what the fundamental principles of a happy life really are. I have discovered more and more that these fundamental principles are  to have a consistent, positive experience of a Loving God.  This happens when  I take quiet time to experience God in prayer and meditation.  I then discover this Loving Presence in each moment of life. Another fundamental principle is to always be loving and positive. This helps me to see love and kindness everywhere and in everyone and to bring more love and kindness to everyone even when people may come across to me as indifferent or cold. It is so amazing how love and kindness help people to smile, feel better and become kinder and more caring.

Because so many of my friends are older now and a number of them have also lost their spouses, the conversations quickly turn to what is the purpose of life, what is the meaning of this life, how few years we have ahead of us. But I find that these conversations are so filled with love, kindness, and profound spirituality.  My faith in a loving God becomes deeper as I am listening to them speak about  their journey in life. I think as I enter these wisdom years of senior living, I appreciate more the depth of God and the depth of God’s love, which I can realize more has always been in my life. But now I can see and experience this so much more.

The search for something deeper gets better when I refuse to invest in any negative thinking or negative speaking. And then it becomes so much easier to invest my energy in God and invest in love and kindness toward everyone.
Everyone is really searching for a loving God and a desire to be loved in each moment of life. Everyone wants something deeper. It will happen when I am prayerfully reflective with God and positively loving toward everyone.
