Alumni committee seeking nominations for awards

Submission deadline is November 1

By Bruce Rolfe

With a deadline of November 1 for Galesburg Augusta Inspirational Alumni Award nominations to be submitted, the GAIAA Committee is seeking nominations.

But the GAIAA Committee is also hoping to avoid what has happened in other school districts who have formed similar programs.

Ardis Cook, one of the organizers of the G-AIAA and a committee member, said most of the programs in other school districts ended after five years.

Cook and GAIAA Committee member Karen Wilson, who provided an update to the G-A School Board in September, don’t want to see that happen at G-A.

There are many G-A alumni who made great use of the education they received at Galesburg-Augusta and gone on to do great things locally, far away and anywhere in between.

The committee encourages the public to get involved by sending in a nomination.

Cook said while there are some people who were nominated and were close to receiving the award, the committee has received only two nominations since last year’s ceremony.

“That’s not enough to keep it going,” said Cook.

Cook said even if a person has already been nominated, if someone else nominated the same person and offered a different explanation why they feel the person is deserving of the award, the committee will have a different perspective.

“The more rounded picture we can get of these people the better it is,” said Cook.

The G-A Inspirational Alumni Award celebrates individuals whose endeavors have brought honor to Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools and who will inspire students on their road to success.

• Nominations must be received by November 1 of each year.
• Nominated by a G-A supporter.
• May be awarded posthumously.
• Recipient selected by the committee based on nominations received.

The first Galesburg-Augusta Inspirational Alumni Award was presented in the spring of 2022.

“I think it’s proven to be a really positive thing. It’s (the ceremony) very wonderful and the people who have come from a far, have really expressed their gratitude,” said Cook.

Nomination forms may also be filled out online at www.g-aschools.org. There is also an option to submit the nomination in writing by using a printable form link on the website above.
