G-A has strong effort at Tournament
While the Galesburg-Augusta varsity volleyball team flourished in multiple areas that led to a set win over some tough teams, the team missed an opportunity to win the tournament trophy with hitting and serving errors in one key match at the Comstock Tournament October 11.
G-A split with Hackett (16-25, 25-22), took two wins over Comstock (25-22, 25-22), defeated Maple Valley twice (25-17, 25-19), split with Allegan (25-16, 19-25) and split with Loy Norris (21-25, 25-17).
“The girls proved they can beat all the teams present at the tourney, winning a set against tough teams like Hackett and Loy Norrix. Unfortunately, after missing multiple serves against Allegan, we decided to give them a win on a set, taking away our chances for the trophy,” explained G-A coach Jonica Klimp.
Klimp said setter Lexi Coburn , who piled up 76 assists in the tournament, had one of her best events of the year, moving the ball well that gave the offense a variety of options.
The G-A coach adds libero Lily Gilbert led the team in defense and serve receive pulling up 47 digs. She also took 70 serves and held a 2.19 average which Klimp said was stellar.
“Having her in the back row full time has improved our passing game,” said Klimp.
Kayla Bortolussi also had a strong day leading in kills with a .345 hitting average and 29 kills.
Grace Gibson also had a strong day serving, piling up 14 aces.

Rams upset at Delton
By Dale Martin
The Galesburg-Augusta varsity football team was dealt a major blow in its bid to make the playoffs this year, losing 36-32 to the host Panthers of Delton-Kellogg last Friday.
Needing two wins in their last three games to qualify for the playoffs the Rams will now need to win their final two games, home against Coloma and at South Haven, to have a chance of extending their season. The last time G-A made the playoffs was in 1996.
G-A (3-4) jumped out to a 14-0 lead on touchdown passes of 47 yards to CJ Bernard and 36 yards to Giovanni Evans from Patrick Armock. Delton-Kellogg (2-5) would narrow the lead with :23 seconds to play in the half on a 39 yard touchdown pass from Tucker Tack to his receiver.
The third quarter was a disaster for the Rams as they gave up 21 unanswered points.
After kicking off to Delton Colton Robertson intercepted a pass giving G-A the ball at the Rams 35 yard line. After picking up a first down, an Armock pass in the flats was intercepted by Tack and he returned it 70 yards for the tying touchdown.
A failed fourth down try by the Rams gave the ball to the Panthers at the G-A 18 yard line. It took just four plays for Delton to take the lead on an 8 yard run.
G-A’s next possession ended badly with Delton gaining possession at the Rams’ 20 yard line. Five plays later it was Tuck scoring from the one yard line giving the Panthers a 28-14 lead as the third quarter ended.
With their backs against the wall the Rams went on a furious fourth quarter run. Giovanni Evans capped a 63 yard drive with a 3 yard touchdown run. He added the two point conversion, narrowing the Delton lead to 28-22.
The G-A defense forced a three and out and a short Panther punt gave the Rams the ball on the Delton 38 yard line.
A 23 yard run by Greg Buckner gave G-A a first down at the 8 yard line and he followed it up with an 8 yard scoring run. Evans again added the two point conversion and the Rams now led 30-28 with 6:30 to play.
Delton responded with a 7 play, 81 yard drive to retake the lead. Once again it was Tack getting the score on a 9 yard run. Tack passed to a teammate for the two point conversion and the Panthers had regained the lead at 36-30 with three minutes to play.
Taking possession at their own 35 yard line, the Rams came roaring back. A 15 yard completion to Jonah Ranes, a 35 yard run by Evans and an 11 yard run by Ranes put the Rams on the 3 yard line with just seconds left but that’s where the drive stalled. Two straight attempts from the one yard line were stopped giving the ball back to Delton on the one foot line.
Dominic Corsi tackled Tack in the endzone for a Ram safety, reducing the deficit to 36-32.
G-A got one last chance.
A 35 yard completion to Bernard put them on the Panther 31 yard line as time expired.
Evans was G-A’s leading rusher with 76 of the teams total of 173 yards. He was also the leading receiver with 3 catches for 116 yards. Armock completed 10 of 17 passes for 248 yards.
Corsi finished the game with 12 tackles for G-A. Robertson made 10 tackles and Ranes and Evans finished with 9 each.
On October 17 the Rams will finish the home season celebrating Senior Night with Coloma (3-4) coming to G-A.
