Final two games cancelled
for G-A JV football team

The final two games on the schedule for the Galesburg-Augusta JV football team were cancelled because G-A did not have enough healthy players.

The Rams were scheduled to play a road game at Coloma October 16 and a home game October 23 against South Haven.

The JVs finish the season with a 1-5 record.

Rams move closer to playoff berth

By Dale Martin

Going into Friday night’s game with Coloma, Galesburg-Augusta was ranked 32nd of the Division 6 teams eligible for the Playoffs. Coloma was ranked 31st. Need less to say a win was crucial if the Rams were to have any chance of making their first playoff appearance since the 1997 season.

G-A kept its playoff hopes alive with a 46-29 win over Coloma last Friday on senior-parent night at Maskill Field.

On the third play of the game, Maverick Kraemer hooked up with J’aevon McKay on a 71 yard pass, Carson Coble added the point after try on a run and the Comets quickly took an 8-0 lead.

The Rams responded quickly. A 12 yard completion from Patrick Armock to Cayden Allie, a 43 yard run by Giovanni Evans and a one yard quarterback sneak by Armock put the Rams on the board just 2 minutes later. The point after try run failed and Coloma held an 8-6 lead.

Coloma responded with a 79 yard scoring drive. Most of the yards on the ground, and Kraemer’s 9 yard run extended the Comets’ first quarter lead to 14-6.

A 26 yard kickoff return by Evans gave the Rams good field position at their own 40 yard line. A 10 yard completion to Greg Buckner and an 18 yard completion to CJ Bernard on a third down play gave G-A a first down at the Coloma 32 yard line.

Jonah Ranes took care of the final yards breaking several tackles enroute to the first of his four touchdowns of the game. The point after try run was unsuccessful and the Rams trailed 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Coloma’s first possession of the second quarter stalled at the Ram 20 yard line.

Armock passed to Bernard for a 52 yard gain. Two plays later Armock hit Ranes on a 29 yard pass giving G-A a first down at the Comet one yard line. Armock got his second touchdown of the game on a quarterback keeper and the Rams took their first lead at 20-14.

The Rams would get two more scoring chances in the half. The first came when Allie sacked Kraemer forcing a fumble covered by Ranes at the Coloma 30 yard line. Unable to move the ball, the Rams turned the ball over on downs at the 29 yard line.

The defense held, forcing the Comets to punt. A bad snap resulted in the Rams taking over at the Coloma 13 yard line. G-A couldn’t move the ball again and turned it back over to the Comets at the 11 yard line.

With less then a minute left in the half, Kraemer and McKay teamed up on an 89 yard bomb giving the lead back to Coloma, 21-20.

The third quarter started out with a bang just like the first quarter had but this time it was the Rams supplying the fireworks.

On the second play of the drive Ranes electrified the Senior Night crowd with a 69 yard run leaving several would-be tacklers in the dust. G-A retook the lead at 26-21.

The  Comets started their next possession at their own 39 yard line. Riding the arm of Kraemer, he would finish the game with 332 yards on 17 completions, they drove to the Ram 2 yard line with Kraemer’s toss to McKay giving Coloma the lead at 29-26.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Rams.

A 62 yard drive ended with Ranes scoring from the 6 yard line, leaving the score Rams 32, Comets 29.

The G-A defense forced the Comets to give the ball back to the Rams at the 29 yard line.

On the next play Armock’s pass to Ranes resulted in a 60 yard pickup down to the Comet 11 yard line. Evans finished the drive with a 5 yard run and Ranes added the point after try, extending the Ram lead to 40-29.

Coloma, 3-5, now had to score quickly. Abandoning the run completely, Coloma went to the air. A 20 yard completion gave them a first down at the Ram 42 yard line. On the very next play Kraemer’s pass was intercepted by Buckner giving the ball back to G-A at their own 12 yard line with 6 minutes to play.

Runs of 14 and 27 yards by Ranes and a 37 yard run by Evans gave the Rams a first down at the Comet 5 yard line. Ranes scored on the next play, sealing the crucial win for the Rams, 46-29.

Ranes finished the night with 177 rushing yards on 12 attempts and 108 yards receiving on 3 catches. Evans also went over the century mark with 107 yards on 11 attempts. Bernard had 2 catches for 70 yards before leaving the game with an injury. Armock completed 8 passes for 216 yards.

The defense was led by Colton Robertson with 10 tackles. Tristan Jackson and Ranes each had 8. Dominic Corsi and Cayden Allie finished with 6 each.

The Rams, now 4-4,  finish the regular season at South Haven, also 4-4, on October 24.
