Loss to Mendon ends C-S’ run
as SCAA champs
Climax-Scotts varsity football coach Tyler Langs will be looking for a positive response from his team at Pittsford October 24 following a disappointing 46-20 loss to Mendon October 17 at Mendon in a game that ended C-S’ two-year run as SCAA Red Division champions and allowed the Hornets to claim the Red Division title.
Mendon improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the SCAA Red Division, while C-S falls to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the SCAA Red Division.
Langs has been pleased with the growth his young team has shown each week, including last Friday’s loss to Mendon. He’s looking for that improvement to continue at Pittsford where C-S will face the SCAA Blue Division champions (7-1 overall and 6-0 in the SCAA Blue Division).
“With our young team, we are continuously working to get better each week. Next week we will be a little bit better than last week. We have good kids that play and practice hard each week. Pittsford week is no different,” explained the C-S coach.
The loss to Mendon ends a 6-game winning skein for C-S.
C-S, which entered the game at Mendon averaging 53.7 points a game, saw its average offensive output sliced by over 60 percent.
While Mendon outgained C-S by just 38 yards (364-326) and had two more first downs (13-11), special teams factored into the 26-point victory for the Hornets.
Mendon had 145 return yards on 4 return attempts compared to C-S’ 17 yards on seven return attempts. C-S averaged just 2.5 yards per return compared to 35 yards per return for Mendon.
Mendon’s special teams unit made an impact on the opening kickoff when Xavior Zinsmaster returned the opening kickoff 80 yards just 12 seconds into the game for a quick 6-0 Hornet lead. The two-point conversion attempt on a run failed.
The Panther offense could not solve the Mendon defense and the Hornets stretched its lead to 14-0 when Owen Gorham broke loose for a 27-yard touchdown run followed by a two-point run by the Hornet senior that gave the home team a 14-0 lead with 5:13 left in the first quarter.
C-S took some momentum into the second quarter when Maddox Wyman found a nice hole and motored 27 yards for a touchdown with 31.8 seconds left in the opening frame. The two-point conversion on a run attempt failed and the Hornets held a 14-6 lead after one quarter.
The defense for both teams enjoyed a strong effort in the second quarter, however Mendon was able to enjoy one scoring drive that sent the home team into halftime with a 22-6 lead.
Gorham scored on a 7-yard touchdown run at the 7:00 mark and Zinsmaster ran in the two-point conversion to establish the halftime lead for Mendon.
C-S pulled to within 10 points when Wyman found a seam and raced 39 yards for a touchdown 2:04 into the third quarter. The two-point conversion attempt failed for a 22-12 Panther deficit.
It took just 1:36 for Mendon to respond, as Gorham found a big hole and took it to the end zone for a 44-yard touchdown run. Zinsmaster ran in the two-point conversion, bumping Mendon’s lead to 30-12 with 8:20 left in the quarter.
Mendon extinguished C-S’ momentum 3:06 later when Gorham scored on a 31-yard touchdown run and Brayden Critz followed with a two-point conversion run with 1:29 left in the third quarter for a 38-20 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Mendon defense kept the Panthers off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter and the offense tacked on eight more points with 3:32 left in the game on a 54-yard touchdown run by JT Lux and two-point conversion run by Gorham.
Mason Shannon caught all eight passes thrown by C-S quarterbacks Maddox Wyman and Alex Wurtzel for 91 yards.
Wurtzel was 6-for-9 for 81 yards passing including one touchdown pass and Wyman was 2-for-6 passing for eight yards.
Wyman carried the ball five times for 77 yards and Liam LaSala added 71 yards rushing on 11 carries.
Mendon finished with 364 yards rushing and C-S had 235 yards on the ground.
