‘This is his team’

C-S assistant coach fills head
coaching role in place of his son

Shortly after Climax-Scotts defeated Gobles 72-62 to advance to the Regional championship game, Panther assistant coach Kevin Langs met the team in the endzone and the first words he said was, “Are you kidding me?”

He pulled up one leg and pumped both fists outward, similar to the same emotional gesture he produced after the C-S team he coached in 2004 defeated Waterford Our Lady Of The Lakes to advance to the State Finals.

The team exploded with cheers after Langs’ comments following last Friday’s win before the longtime former head coach and current assistant coach added, “now’s the time to get fired up, right? Unbelievable job.”

However on a night when there was a lot of happiness after C-S defeated Gobles to advance to the second round of the playoffs, there was also a bit of sadness.

Kevin Langs, the Hall of Fame coach and former long time head coach at C-S, has been coaching the team the last two weeks in place of his son Tyler, C-S’ head coach.

C-S Superintendent Doug Newington said the school district received some complaints regarding current C-S head football coach Tyler Langs, and is performing a thorough investigation.

Tyler Langs is also athletic director and dean of students at C-S.

Newington said Tyler has been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is being performed.

A statement from the school district notes, “the school district has received complaints regarding the current football coach. The district will not comment on the allegations within those complaints and is consulting with legal counsel to complete a thorough investigation. During this investigation the football coach will remain on paid administrative leave from his employment within the district in all capacities. We hope this process will move swiftly and reach a final conclusion in the coming days.”

After 23 years as a head coach at C-S, with over 190 career wins overall, and guiding C-S teams into the playoffs 20 years, Kevin Langs has filled the head coaching role he currently finds himself in, effectively.

While he’s enjoyed coaching the team, the Hall of Fame coach admits he would prefer to be serving in the role he has the last four years as an assistant coach.

He’s also a good father and he cares for his son. This has been tough on him personally.

It’s been tough on his son. Tough on the entire family.

“He’s my son. Somebody I have a lot of respect for. So it’s tough because you want to be loyal and sensitive to your boy and the kids. Tyler said, ‘Dad, coach the team.’ It’s still not easy, because this is his team. This is his team, his boys. It’s kind of tough,” said Kevin Langs.

To their credit, the players have played well despite the distraction of not having their head coach present. It started at Pittsford in the regular season finale, a 72-64 win for C-S, and continued Friday with a 72-62 win over Gobles.

But it’s still been different.

“It is sad. We all wish he was here. It’s just one of those things we have to deal with and push through,” said C-S senior Liam LaSala.

Junior Maddox Wyman adds after playing under Coach Tyler Langs for three years, it was sad not having him on the sidelines the last two games and at practice.

“It does suck a little. But with the way coach Langs (Kevin Langs) has us playing right now, I’m happy with where we are,” said Wyman.

Wyman adds after the players were told their head coach would not be coaching or at practice, they accepted it and started preparing for what was ahead.

“We were expecting to go in (to the Gobles game) with what we had through out the week with Coach (Kevin) Langs. He coaches well, he gets us fired up. We’re excited to play for him for however long he’s still the head coach,” said Wyman.
