While it is still uncertain whether the government shutdown will impact the November 11 Veterans Day ceremony at the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, two local events are scheduled to take place on the holiday.
The Climax-Scotts American Legion Post #465 will be holding a Veterans Day dinner, Tuesday, November 11 starting at 5:30 p.m.
Veterans eat for free. The cost for non-veterans is $13 per plate.
The local American Legion will be serving chicken breast with sides while supplies last.
The VFW in Augusta will hold a flag burning ceremony with Galesburg Scout Troop #265 on Veterans Day, November 11 at 5 p.m.
VFW Post 7956 Commander Jeff Widmer said the local VFW Post have held flag burning ceremonies previously and have found the ceremony to be powerful, respectful and patriotic.
“It’s a great opportunity to raise awareness in Flag Etiquette and show what is being done by our VFW working not only with Veterans but with community as well,” said Widmer.
The Augusta VFW Post has a flag drop off in front of the Post.
