The Galesburg-Augusta Board of Education discussed the recently defeated bond proposal at a special meeting November 10 and is expected to make a decision whether to bring the bond proposal back to the voters at the November 17 meeting.
G-A Superintendent Dr. Lindsey Newton said a May, 2026 bond proposal will be discussed at the November 17 meeting.
Newton said because the state does not provide infrastructure funds, a bond proposal is the district’s only option to address items she said are needed.
Lower voter turnout and two precincts flipping how it voted on a bond proposal in 2021 were key takeaways in a $11.2 bond proposal that was defeated in the Galesburg-Augusta School District November 4.
The bond proposal, which would have addressed needs at the G-A Primary, Middle School, High School and Transportation Facility, was defeated 836-731 (53.35%-46.65%).
There was significant lower voter turnout November 4 compared to a $16.5 million bond project that was approved by voters in 2021. According to the Kalamazoo County election results website, approximately 29 percent more voters voted for the 2021 proposal 1176-1032 (53.26%-46.74%).
A breakdown of the five precinct totals shows voters in two of the precincts that approved the 2021 bond proposal, voted the November 4 proposal down.
According to the county election website, in 2021, voters in Charleston Township approved the proposal 278-275, however on November 4, voters turned the proposal down, 252-190.
G-A voters in Comstock Township approved the 2021 proposal 451-378, however on November 4, voters in that precinct defeated the proposal 320-290.
The November 4 proposal was approved by voters in Charter Township of Pavilion Precinct 2, 32-13, and the City of Galesburg precinct 156-115. The proposal was voted down by Ross Township Precinct 1 voters, 117-82.
If the school district does bring a bond back to the voters, Newton feels the district will need to communicate better with absentee ballot voters.
The November 4 defeated proposal continues an overall pattern of proposals being turned down in the G-A School District since 1996. According to the State Department of Treasury, voters in the G-A School District have defeated proposals 12 times and approved three proposals since 1996.
