Uncertainty surrounds C-S football entering off season

By Bruce Rolfe

While a thorough investigation into some complaints the Climax-Scotts School District received regarding current C-S head football coach Tyler Langs entered a third week, Panther Nation is left wondering if there will be any fallout and what the future looks like.

A 2006 graduate of C-S High School, Tyler Langs is also dean of students and athletic director at C-S.

Tyler Langs is currently on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

A statement from the school district that was published in the October 31 Climax Crescent adds “during this investigation the football coach will remain on paid administrative leave from his employment within the district in all capacities.”

Current assistant coach and former longtime C-S head football coach Kevin Langs served as head coach in his son’s absence the last three games of the season.

Langs admits the last three weeks have been challenging for his family.

While he has not made an official statement about his future, the Hall of Fame coach said: “it has been an incredible blessing for our family to have been allowed to be a part of Climax-Scotts Community Schools. And some tough and emotional decisions will have to be made in the next few days and our family is praying about those decisions.”

The 2025 season was Tyler Langs’ fourth year as head coach after he served as co-head coach with his father in 2021.

There are still unanswered questions. However one certainty is the Panthers have a lot of potential heading into next season.

The playoff roster shows C-S will graduate five seniors from a team that finished 8-3 following a 36-20 loss to Martin last Friday in the 8-Man, Division 1 Regional Championship game played at Martin. The five graduating seniors are Blake Buddemeier, Dean Parks, Liam LaSala, Hunter LaSala and Demarion Taylor.

The team showed tremendous growth as the season moved along. C-S followed a season opening loss to Gobles with six straight wins and the team turned the tables on Gobles in the first round of the playoffs with a 72-62 win.

“The growth was immaculate. Coming from week one all the way to now. It just shows how good of a team we are, how well we can work together. Playing for each other. I’m excited for next year. Growing over the summer and training. We’ll be back next year,” said junior Elijah Bowron.

The Panther running back and defensive back feels the growth and a potential roster with 25 returners including many who saw significant playing time this year and were big contributors to the successful season, injects motivation heading into next season.

Bowron, who churned out 1165 yards on 101 carries for an average of 11.5 yards per carry, returns as the second leading rusher this season.

The Panthers also return both quarterbacks that saw considerable action this year, junior Maddox Wyman and sophomore Alex Wurtzel. Wurtzel completed 36-of-50 passes for 597 yards and six passing touchdowns.

Wyman completed 24-of-35 passes for 446 yards and four touchdown passes. Wyman rushed for an additional 889 yards on 75 carries.

The two quarterbacks will have one of their favorite targets returning, junior Mason Shannon, who caught 31 passes for 573 yards including six touchdown receptions.

C-S returns its leading tackler on defense, sophomore Easton VanMiddlesworth, who totaled  63 tackles including 32 solo tackles. He had a team high eight tackles for a loss and six sacks.

Bowron, who had 58 tackles including a team high 40 solo tackles and three interceptions, will also return on the defensive side of the ball.

Wyman, who had 57 tackles, including 32 solo tackles and a team high four interceptions and sophomore Dane Sattler, who added 53 tackles including 30 solo tackles and four tackles for a loss, also return.

“In this game, we’re playing for each other. This team, we’ve got a lot of young guys. Next year, we want to come back stronger and we want to prove to everyone that we can come back and we can beat a Martin.

We can beat a Mendon next year. We’re better then people think we are and next year we’re going to come back really strong. We’re playing for each other,” adds Bowron.

C-S junior Mason Shannon feels the loss to Martin will bring motivation to get to the next level.

“I think since we have a young team, our team next year will be really good and I think we’ll be able to beat Martin because they have a lot of older players (seniors graduating),” said the C-S junior.

Assistant coach Kevin Langs sees great potential and hopes the returners grasp the opportunity to get better next season.

“Real proud of them. I guess we’ll see what that means in the future. They have a little bit of a taste to maybe take another step,” said the Hall of Fame coach.
