C-S Volleyball, Football Teams Fall Short In
Regional Championship Games, But Left Their Mark

There were plenty of tears flowing and hugs exchanged over the course of just three days after both the Climax-Scotts volleyball and football teams saw their dreams of grasping a regional championship trophy snatched away with losses.

Mendon overtook the Lady Panthers in the regional championship match Nov. 12 in three sets and then two days later the Panther football team saw its season end in the regional championship game with a 48-14 loss to Ottawa Lake Whiteford.

Audette, Myers, Dixon Have Played Football
Together Since 2nd Grade Rocket Football

While it was especially difficult for the seniors to accept they had played their last high school football game following Climax-Scotts’ 48-14 setback to Ottawa Lake Whiteford in Saturday’s regional championship game, there was a little extra emotional tug for seniors Adam Audette, Dylan Dixon and Todd Myers.

The three seniors have been playing football together since second grade.

Through the Rocket Football program, junior high and now high school, the three have been battling for each other and their teammates.

Sibling Rivalry On The Basketball Court

When Jodi and Jenalee VeenKant step onto the basketball court and are a part of a pickup game against each other, or just shooting hoops in the driveway, a natural instinct of doing their best against the other surfaces.

But sibling rivalry reached a new level for the two Climax sisters when they faced each other in a big Class D Regional contest Wednesday at Wayland Union High School.

Jodi is a senior guard on the Climax-Scotts varsity squad which advanced tot he regionals with its 43-41 win over Martin, while Jenalee is a freshman guard/forward on Kalamazoo First Academy, which defeated Tekonsha in the district championship game to advance to the regionals.

The off court banter and chirping has already begun in the VeenKant household about who’s going to finish on top Monday, but whoever wins, their hearts are in the right place.

Panthers Rule In District Title Game, 43-41

While the country sits on pins and needles waiting for official presidential vote counts to come in from Florida, Martin and Climax-Scotts kept fans on the edge of their seats right to the final buzzer in a Class D District championship game at Lawrence High School Friday evening.

The game wasn’t decided until Sara Harthorn’s 25-footer fell short at the buzzer, allowing the Panthers to post a 43-41 victory over Martin in the District Championship contest.

The last time C-S enjoyed a district championship was 10 years ago.

Sallie Bowman had a big game for the winners, pouring in 18 points, Jessie Loegel added eight points, Jeri Bowman, Katie Moreland and Erin Bailey each scored four points, Janelle VanMiddlesworth added three and Jamie Robbins and Jodi VeenKant each scored one point.

Kelly VeenKant Earns All American Scholar Athlete Honors

VeenKant, a junior on the team, also helped her Indiana Wesleyan College cross country team to a third place finish at the nationals, finishing 68th overall and fifth for her team with a time of 19:59 on a tough course.

New Township Board Will Retain
Former Assessor Until New One Is Hired

Although it was shorthanded, the Climax Township Board took care of one important matter in a hurry at a special township board meeting Tuesday evening when it hired former township assessor Robert Hibbard on a temporary basis which should put the township on the right path to getting tax notices out by Dec. 1.

Supervisor James Collins, treasurer Connie Hunter, and former treasurer Monique Strong, who was elected to a trustee position, were all sworn into office Monday, giving the new township board the required number of members needed to hold a public meeting Tuesday.

Curtis White, who was elected to a 4-year trustee seat, was not present when Kalamazoo County Clerk Tim Snow swore the newly elected officials into office Monday, but was in attendance at Tuesday evening’s meeting.
