Board hears support for C-S coach; investigation continues

By Bruce Rolfe

While an investigation into complaints against Climax-Scotts varsity football coach Tyler Langs entered a fifth week, supporters for Langs emerged at the November 17 C-S Board of Education Meeting.

Langs, also the Dean of Students and Athletic Director at C-S, is currently on paid administrative leave from his employment within the district in all capacities.

The School District said through a statement that was published in the October 31 Climax Crescent, notes the District will not comment on the allegations within those complaints and is consulting with legal counsel to complete a thorough investigation

After first talking about the positive impact Tyler’s father, Kevin Langs has had on him and the community as the C-S varsity football coach, a teacher, athletic director and Dean of Students at C-S, Dominic Bushouse turned his attention to similar qualities he sees in Tyler.

“The kids that face challenges are the kids that I worry about. The ones that I make a point to every chance I get, to speak every bit of life into them that I can. And I know Tyler was raised the exact same way,” said Bushouse, a 2008 graduate of Climax-Scotts High School.

“I can tell you that through my experience and my growing up in this community, the removal of Tyler steals from this community’s future. Because I’m invested in this community, I volunteer in youth sports, I have three young kids. So as we move forward and I charge all with this to make the best decision, because they’re not easy decisions. What is the motivation? What is the actual impact?

And, what happens to this community if Tyler is removed from this equation. Please allow Tyler that space to become the second generation leader this community deserves,” continued Bushouse.

Langs served as dean of students and head varsity football coach at Centreville in 2017, 2018 and 2019. One of his assistant coaches, Aaron Hartong, told the board and audience he “would not be the coach I am today without Tyler Langs.”

Hartong said he and Langs enjoyed many positive talks about improving themselves as men, improving the young men under them and changing the culture at Centreville.

“And that’s exactly what happened in those years. Tyler was there to support teachers, he was there to hold, not just football players, but all students accountable in the classroom that were making life miserable for my colleagues. Classroom support was universal. He also preached a universal community first mentality on all sports teams. It wasn’t about Tina and Timmy and Jimmy and Joe.

Whenever we broke down, it was, one big hand for the “Ville (Centreville). It’s not about my kids’ stats, not about your kids’ stats. It’s about our community. And I think that is the legacy that he left at Centreville,” said Hartong.

“Kids sought Tyler out in some of their worst and lowest points in their life. They wanted to have his perspective, his wisdom. The thing about Tyler that I think most people don’t understand is it’s about the standard, and there’s a formula. If you’re going to be successful in life, you do certain things, and if you don’t do them, you just won’t be successful. While he loved everyone under him, he’s going to hold you accountable for that standard,” adds Hartong.

Another supporter said her son was attending the Battle Creek Lakeview School District when she and her husband chose to transfer their son to the C-S School District through School of Choice. She said the experience was positive from day one.

Her son played football for Tyler the first year Langs took over as varsity coach at C-S.

“My boy, he is not an all star athlete. But Tyler fed into him, pushed him the way a father would. I think that is the strength that people look for in a football coach,” said the woman.

“For me, if you guys lose Tyler, you’re losing a lot,” the woman added.
