Thanksgiving meals distributed in Scotts, Climax, Fulton

Wolverine Gas and Oil Corporation once again teamed up with a group of local business owners, and community supporters to deliver Thanksgiving meals to local families November 24.

Former Scotts Corner Café owners Mark and Bonnie Hanson organize the event each year, contacting Country Christian Evangelical Free Church in Scotts, the Climax and Scotts United Methodist Churches, Peace Community Church in Climax, Prairie Baptist Church in Scotts, and Wakeshma Community Church in Fulton for a list of families in the area that could use assistance with a Thanksgiving meal.

Lulu’s Scotts Café owners Lulu and Daniel Reyes delivered the Thanksgiving meals to the Prairie Baptist Church, Country Christian Church, Peace Community Church in Climax, and the Scotts United Methodist Church food pantry where volunteers Jo and Bob Ramsdell pack the Thanksgiving boxes for distribution for the Climax and Scotts United Methodist churches.

Wolverine Gas and Oil Corporation purchased all of the Thanksgiving meal items. Pease Packing Corp purchased the pies and turkeys and were reimbursed by Wolverine Gas and Oil.

Representatives from the churches met at Lulu’s Scotts Café November 24 where the Thanksgiving meals were distributed and delivered to the local churches.

A total of 81 meals were delivered, the highest total since the program started in 2019.

There were 25 Thanksgiving meals delivered to the Scotts United Methodist Church food pantry where families later picked up the meals. Six meals were distributed to the Climax United Methodist Church, 10 meals were distributed to the Country Christian Evangelical Free Church, 10 Thanksgiving meals were taken to the Prairie Baptist Church, 20 meals were provided to Wakeshma Community Church, and 10 Thanksgiving meals were delivered to Peace Community Church in Climax.

Representatives from the  churches delivered the meals to the families.

Richard Moritz, vice-president of the Wolverine Gas & Oil Land Division, approached the Hansons in 2019 about an opportunity to work with the former Scotts Corner Café owners, who contacted local churches to determine how many local families could use assistance Thanksgiving. 

A total of 52 meals were distributed the first year, 72 meals were distributed in 2020, 75 in 2021, 60 in 2022, 75 meals were distributed in 2023 and 76 meals were distributed in 2024.
