Volunteerism Shines So Village Of Climax
Will Be Decorated With Christmas Spirit

The Village of Climax is getting into the Christmas spirit and the sights and sounds of the season will reach a peak Nov. 28 when the Climax Rotary Club hangs Christmas lights in the morning followed by the “Lighting Of The Christmas Tree” later in the day.

Volunteers Jessica Bailey and Crystal Rolfe from the Revitalize Climax group, were joined by local volunteers, Marilee Sondgerath and Denise Wilson getting the heart of downtown decked out for the Christmas season by decorating the large Sound Stage I window offered by Jim and Library” hosting a mini Faye Cummings at the corner of Main and Maple Streets.

The village illuminated with more Christmas glow earlier this week when Burkett Signs offered the services of a lift bucket and employees Fred Abercrombie and Mike Menck to place lights on the Village Christmas tree.

The Village will radiate even more with the holiday spirit when the Climax Rotary Club hangs Christmas lights and street light ornaments Saturday morning, a service the local Rotary Club has offered for many years.

The Climax Village Park and Lawrence Memorial Library will be the hub for the Friends of the Library and Revitalize Climax groups’ late afternoon and early evening activities planned for Nov. 28.

Starting at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 28 the “Friends of the Library” will open up the Lawrence Memorial Library doors for a mini Christmas bazaar.

The “Lighting of the Village Christmas Tree” will take place Nov. 28 at 5:30 p.m.

Homemade Christmas ornaments made by the loving hands from the Climax-Scotts Elementary School Art Club and Kids Corner Child Care programs will be hung on the large pine tree by the students who made the items.

She’s 102 And Lydia Nickerson Shows
No Sign Of Slowing Down

She battled back from a broken hip two years ago; she is recovering nicely from some minor injuries from a fall three weeks ago; and not even a recent bout with some asthma will slow Lydia Nickerson down - and she’s only 102.

Nickerson celebrated her 102nd birthday with some friends during a surprise visit Tuesday, hours before celebrating her birthday again with her daughter Betty and a granddaughter, in Battle Creek.

Volunteers Help Save G-A School District Significant
Amount Of Money For New Sign In Front Of High School

Plenty of volunteer labor and a contact at a large Kalamazoo Company helped the Galesburg-Augusta School District save a large chunk of cash for a new electronic sign that was installed recently at the corner of 35th and Battle Creek Streets in front of G-A High School.

Galesburg resident Gary Henson, an employee at Pharmacia, obtained the sign from Pharmacia’s investment recovery unit last spring for $1000, a huge savings over what the company paid for the sign. He noted the sign is only two years old and cost Pharmacia in excess of $36,000. With all of the volunteer help that assisted with the project, the total cost of the sign and supplies was just $1263.

Once the sign was purchased, volunteers installed the sign and Tim Nuyen, of Nuyen Electric donated his time to hook the sign up to the school.

Henson noted either monetary contributions, equipment donations or volunteer help with the sign came from the G-A Sports Boosters, G-A Football Boosters, G-A Band Boosters, Midway Cafe, Carl and Vicki Newton, Gary and Martha Allen, Loyal and Wanda Perry, Rob Wilson, Gary and Dawn Henson, the Ohio Drilling Company, the G-A PTA, and Nuyen Electric.

Thieves Break Into Climax-Scotts School

Thieves broke into the Climax Elementary School late Thursday or early Friday, November 20th or 21st. This was followed by another break-in at the Jr.-Sr. High late Saturday, November 22nd or early November 23rd. In both cases the thieves gained entrance to the buildings, and different rooms within the buildings, by breaking windows or door locks. A total of ten windows were broken and several locks and doors broken open, bringing the cost of property damage to about $850. The intruders made off with school property valued at $4,000 to $4,500.

Some of the items taken were:

Balance beams from the Science Department; Cymbals, drums and the complete sound and recording system from the Band Room; Three typewriters and adding machines, from the Elementary Office; Cassette recorders, radio, two television sets, and two Raggedy Ann dolls from the other elementary rooms.

Several other items owned by the school or staff members were also taken.

Family Night Well Attended

About 80 persons attended Family Night at the Methodist Church Wednesday evening. After a delicious pot-luck supper, a very enjoyable program was started by group singing led by Mr. Hugh Robbins, English and Band instructor at the Climax Township School. Mrs. Betty Roe accompanied on the piano and Fred Roof on the Violin. Ivan Culp, magician, then treated those present with some of his baffling tricks. He mystified both young and old as he repeatedly demonstrated that the hand was quicker than the eye. A very successful evening was closed with more group singing.

Roads Blocked By Heavy Snow

One of the most severe storms to hit Michigan in November in many years struck last Thanksgiving day. By Sunday morning some roads were blocked and schools throughout the county were closed the forepart of the week. It was estimated that about 12 inches of snow fell, drifting badly in some spots.
