Detroit Mercy Law student aims to be a ‘catalyst ’for social change in community

In his work as an intake specialist/ medical records manager at Disability Attorneys of Michigan, Nick Lachajewski enjoyed helping people and gained an appreciation for how the law can help them on a much smaller scale.

“I believe the majority of the problems our society faces in the present day originate from a lack of community. I believe societal norms shifted to where nobody really looks out for one another anymore, causing feelings of isolation amongst individuals,” he says. “I’ve held this belief for a considerable amount of time, and it was further affirmed through my experience during my law firm employment.

“I can’t even begin to describe how many people called into our office complaining about how they have no one to turn to in this matter, that the system has completely forsaken them, and that they have exhausted all of their options,” he says. “They felt utterly isolated, which in some cases, further exacerbated their medical conditions. By providing some form of relief to these isolated individuals, in the way that I could, I discovered my purpose in the pursuit of a legal career.”

Recipient of a Fellows Scholarship covering 100 percent tuition, Lachajewski headed to Detroit Mercy Law in August, and is excited for the opportunities that will be presented to him.

“I want to be someone's guiding light in their legal matter, someone that can cast aside any notions of the system forgetting them. I am—without any doubt in my mind—looking forward to the day I can do this. Maybe by working with the ‘forgotten’ individuals, I can actually bring about some form of social change, regardless of the scale.

“I can’t say for certain if I’m going to be the catalyst for this social change, but either way, I know my mission, and I’ll do everything in my power to accomplish it.”

Lachajewski is a graduate of De La Salle Collegiate High School in Warren, where in his senior year he was a member of the Mock Trial team competing at the Macomb County Mock Trial competition at the Macomb County Circuit Court. He earned his undergrad degree in political science from the University of Michigan, after transferring from Wayne State University.

During undergrad, Lachajewski did a nine-month internship in the district office of Sen. Michael D. MacDonald (R-10) where he specialized in community outreach, including door-to-door canvassing, drafting documents to send to constituents, writing congratulatory letters to members of District 10, and acting as a representative of the Senator during community meetings.

“I often conversed with the Senator's constituents about their concerns and how the Senator will address them—I then relayed that information to the Senator and we would discuss strategies to best serve the members of District 10,” he says. “Being relied on like this gave me great joy and piqued my interest in advocacy.”

In October 2024, in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lachajewski organized a fund-raiser for the Shades of Pink Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping breast cancer patients with financial assistance for treatment programs, child care expenses, transportation costs, and more. The cause was personal as his mother Michelle is a breast cancer survivor.  Baking and selling his mother’s famous chocolate chip cookies, Lachajewski raised more than $1,200, an amount matched by the foundation.

A native of Warren, where he still makes his home, Lachajewski played for the Macomb Outlaws in the Macomb Amateur Baseball Federation; is passionate about the outdoors, and has won several fishing championships.

“I’m an avid fisherman and will never pass up an opportunity to fish,” he says. “I’m also incredibly active and love working out.”
