C-S boys basketball team
aiming for improvement
By Bruce Rolfe
The Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team will be striving to improve on last year’s 5-16 finish.
C-S coach Kenny Sattler hopes a roster that works hard and includes seven returners along seven players up from the JV team that posted a 14-5 record last year, lead to more wins this season.
Sattler said the 5-16 finish last year created motivation to not only improve the overall record, but make in game adjustments that puts the team in a better position to win, especially in close games.
C-S lost four games by seven points or less last year.
“The kids have expressed that they want to be better. Our schedule this year is still tough and there will be some growing pains. But I know they will rise to the challenges ahead of us,” points out the C-S coach, entering his eighth season.
The Panthers also hope to get off to a better start. C-S started 1-5 overall heading into the Christmas break last season, including a five-game losing streak to begin the season.
Seniors Hunter LaSala, Liam LaSala, Tye Chambers, juniors Maddox Wyman, and Mason Shannon and sophomores Nyle Sattler and Dane Sattler are the varsity returners.
The rest of the team consists of juniors Zach Roebuck, Ashton Heighton and Dustin Crandall, and sophomores Alex Wurtzel, Luke Frost, Aaden Krick and Blake Wechsler.
So far, Sattler has seen a commitment to get better each game.
“We have great chemistry and cohesiveness about us. The kids enjoy being around each other and want to do well for each other. We have a great opportunity to be a really strong team,” observed the C-S coach.
When looking at the seven team SCAA West Division C-S finished sixth in last year, Sattler feels all teams in the division are strong and will be competitive.
“Every night is going to be a battle, and every game on our schedule will be a challenge,” observed the C-S coach

C-S wrestling without co-op arrangement
By Bruce Rolfe
The Climax-Scotts wrestling team will be wrestling outside of a co-op arrangement for the first time since the 2010-2011 season and a familiar former head coach is returning to guide the team.
Jason Wade, who stepped down as the varsity coach two years ago so he could enjoy more time watching his children participate in youth sports, has returned as head coach.
After serving as head coach for 19 years and learning former head coach Mike Reitz was stepping down as head coach after the 24-25 season, Wade said uncertainty around the program motivated him to get back in as the head coach.
“I didn’t want to see it go the wrong way with the co-op being dissolved, Mike (Reitz) stepping down. You want to make sure it was still in a good place. I think if we were still in the co-op it would have been a little bit different. There was a lot of stuff happening and it can go the wrong way quick and I definitely didn’t want that to happen with all the time put into it,” explained Wade, a 1997 graduate of C-S High School.
“It’s going to be different. We’ve had a co-op the last 15 years or so. The dynamics will be a little bit different but also exciting at the same time. We get to wrestle under our own name solely. I think the kids are excited about it and ready to go out there and prove themselves and make a name for themselves,” adds Wade.
C-S dipped into a co-op arrangement for the first time for the 2011-2012 season with Athens. The co-op team advanced to the Division 4 Team State Finals in 2015 when the team was defeated by Decatur 47-22 in the quarterfinals.
C-S and Athens remained together until 2014 when Athens dissolved the co-op because the Big 8 league Athens is a member of, would not recognize Athens or C-S wrestlers’ accomplishments at league events as long as they were participating as a co-op.
C-S and Martin joined together as a co-op for the 2014-2015 season because participation numbers in both school districts were low, making it difficult to win as a team.
The C-S-M co-op enjoyed some memorable seasons, advancing to the Team State Finals event three straight years, capped off by Team Hybrid’s appearance in the state championship match last year when the team lost to Hudson.
However the situation with C-S and Martin has changed. Enrollment numbers in both school districts have gone up, putting the co-op in a situation where the team would have been bumped up to Division 3 in wrestling competition.
A deep lineup at many weight classes left wrestlers from both schools wrestling JV matches or simply on the sideline watching.
C-S will be wrestling as an independent this year. There are some SCAA schools C-S is a member of, that will wrestle C-S. However Wade points out some of those SCAA schools have small participation numbers, making it tough for some SCAA opponents to fill most weight classes.
Wade said C-S will wrestle pretty much the same tournament schedule the school did in previous years.
Wrestling on their own could create more opportunities for C-S wrestlers to show case their talent.
“There was some pretty good kids waiting in the wings that just couldn’t quite crack the lineup because of how good the lineup was last year,” said Wade.
The C-S-M co-op advanced to the team state finals the last three years, offering great memories.
Wade said the team understands the dynamics have changed. Making a deep run again in the postseason remains something the team would like to experience again.
“With 14 weight classes, you’ve got to have 14 kids but also 14 kids with the same weight. That’s tough to do in a small school because you’ve got limited numbers to begin with. To make it back, I think we can be really successful again. Our main focus is making sure everybody is doing their job and getting better individually and the end result, that’s going to bring us a pretty solid team,” explained the C-S coach, who said staying healthy is a key factor as well.
The returning former head coach said he likes the attitude and work ethic of this year’s team.
“The biggest thing I noticed right away is how hard they work. They do everything I ask and work their tails off. I think they’re going to surprise some people, especially if they keep up that work ethic and just learning and growing. By the time we get to the postseason, I think we’re going to be o.k.,” said Wade.
Assistant coaches are Jeremiah West, who runs the C-S Youth Program, and Mike Porlier. Helping out with practices is 2025 C-S graduate Jackson Bagwell, former head coach Mike Reitz, John Dudley, Paul Bowers and Wade’s father, Jim Wade, who started the wrestling program at C-S in 1986.
