Emily Coleman’s basket at horn sends
Rams into break on positive note
By Bruce Rolfe
Coaches are always hoping for a little momentum entering the Christmas break.
Galesburg-Augusta junior Emily Coleman made sure that happened when she sank a 10-foot basket at the horn to secure a 38-36 win for the Rams in the consolation game of the Mendon Holiday Tournament December 23.
G-A, now 2-1, dropped a 47-26 decision to Sturgis in the tournament opener December 22.
With the score tied 36-36, G-A freshman Rayonna Alexander made a nice long inbounds pass to an open Coleman just inside the key. She turned and dropped in the 10-foot basket as the final buzzer sounded, setting off a wild celebration on the G-A bench and on the floor.
Dunithan said the play was set up for Grace Gibson to drive the lane and pass off but Coleman wound up getting the ball in her hands and she delivered the game winning basket at the horn.
“That’s a great win for us right there,” said Dunithan.
Dunithan challenged her team at halftime after the Rams fell behind 19-13.
“I went into the locker room at halftime and said, who wants it more? You’ve got to prove that you want it more,” explained the G-A coach.
The Rams responded with a strong third quarter, sparked by senior Grace Gibson’s 10 points including a pair of three-point baskets that helped G-A to a 31-27 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was tight.
G-A moved in front 34-32 on a basket by Coleman with 3:53 left, however Centreville’s Drew Alexander knocked down a triple to give the Bulldogs a 35-34 lead with 3:28 remaining.
Another Coleman basket with 2:44 left gave the Rams a 36-35 lead with 2:44 left.
Drew Alexander split a pair of free throws with 2:22 left, setting up the last second win.
Both teams struggled with turnovers and cold shooting in the first quarter. Leah Roberts’ basket with 39.8 seconds left gave the Bulldogs a 7-5 lead after one quarter.
An offensive rebound and basket by G-A’s Brooklyn James with 3:48 left in the second quarter tied the game at 7-7, however G-A trailed the rest of the quarter, settling for a 19-13 deficit at halftime when Rayonna Alexander sank a pair of free throws with 1:22 left in the quarter.
Gibson finished with 15 points, five rebounds and five steals to lead G-A.
Coleman scored eight points to go with two steals and Kayla Bortolussi had eight rebounds.
The Rams finished shooting 26.6 percent (12-45) from two-point range and 3-for-10 from the three-point line.
