Falling behind early haunts Panthers
A recent pattern of climbing back into the game and falling short continued for the Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team January 6 in a 52-39 loss to Quincy at C-S Jr./Sr. High School and again three days later in a 47-41 loss to Battle Creek St. Philip at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.
C-S, now 2-5, has been outscored 103-51 in the first half of its last four games.
The Panthers trailed the Tigers 39-25 entering the fourth quarter, but a familiar pattern of battling back only to fall short resumed for C-S.
The Panthers, behind strong defense and good rebounding (12-6 rebounding edge in the fourth quarter) outscored the Tigers 16-8 in the final quarter but could not secure the win.
St. Phil, behind a 67 percent effort (6-9) from two-point range in the third quarter, entered the final frame with a 39-25 lead.
After falling behind 13-6 at the end of the first quarter, C-S shot 60 percent (3-5) from two-point range and added a three-point basket to pull to within 21-16 at halftime.
C-S was outrebounded 36-31 including a 12-10 margin under the offensive boards.
C-S shot 32 percent (16-40) overall from the floor including a cool 14 percent (2-14) effort from the three-point line.
St. Phil shot 35 percent overall (18-36) but was 0-for-15 on three-point attempts.
Nyle Sattler, with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals, led C-S. Maddox Wyman added nine points and four rebounds and Hunter LaSala, who had nine rebounds, and Liam LaSala, who had seven boards, each contributed eight points.

Quincy Holds off C-S
C-S battled back from a late third quarter double digit deficit and reduced Quincy’s lead to one possession in the fourth quarter, but fell short, 52-49 January 6.
The Panthers pulled to within 37-24 after three quarters on a Nyle Sattler triple with 38 seconds left in the quarter.
C-S used strong defense and determination to chip away at the deficit immediately in the fourth quarter.
Nyle Sattler led the fourth quarter comeback, scoring 19 of his 28 points in the stanza.
A Nyle Sattler basket on an offensive rebound 14 seconds into the quarter and another three-point basket by Sattler 28 seconds later got the deficit under 10 points (37-29) with 7:18 left in the game.
A three-point basket by Nyle Sattler at the 4:07 mark after a pair of Quincy free throws pulled C-S to within 40-37.
Quincy stretched the lead to 47-41 with 1:14 left.
The Panthers missed an opportunity to pull to within two points on a pair of free throw misses. However C-S forced a Quincy turnover moments later and Liam LaSala turned the miscue into two points with a basket down low with 29.3 seconds left for a 47-45 deficit.
Quincy split a pair of free throws with 22.4 seconds left, but got the offensive rebound on the second missed free throw.
The Panthers fouled with 17.1 seconds left.
Quincy’s Braylon Estlow sank two free throws, pushing the lead to 50-45.
Dane Sattler split a pair of free throws with 14.2 seconds left, however a steal by Maddox Wyman and a nifty pass to Nyle Sattler, who was cutting to the basket and scored with 9.7 seconds left, pulled C-S to within 50-49.
C-S fouled Estlow with 2.8 seconds left and the Quincy guard made both free throws establishing the final score.
C-S attempted a long pass that was intercepted by Quincy’s Christian Craven about five feet outside of the right three-point line.
Quincy pulled out to a 9-4 lead after one quarter and led by a 22-8 count at halftime.
Sattler, who knocked down four three-point baskets, led C-S in scoring with 28 points on 7-for-14 shooting from two-point range and 4-for-12 from distance. The Panther sophomore added six rebounds, three steals and four assists.

JVs top South Haven
The Climax-Scotts girls JV basketball team overcame a scoreless first quarter with strong defense and held on for a 23-22 win over South Haven January 6 at South Haven.
C-S, now 3-2, trailed by a 2-0 count after one quarter, took an 8-4 lead into halftime and led by a 12-7 count after three quarters.
Kameroyn Blair led C-S in scoring with 12 points.

JV boys basketball team moves to 6-1
The Climax-Scotts JV boys basketball team responded to its first loss with a 33-19 win over Battle Creek St. Philip January 9 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.
C-S, now 6-1, used strong defense throughout the game to post the win, holding the Tigers to single digits each quarter.
The Panthers led by a 20-9 count at halftime and pulled away in the third quarter, taking a 35-15 lead into the final frame.
Ashton Heighton scored 16 points and Alexander Albarran added 11 points to lead C-S in scoring.

Quincy Hands C-S JVs First Loss
The Climax-Scotts JV boys basketball team suffered its first loss of the season to Quincy January 6, 37-27.
The two teams entered the third quarter tied 15-15, but C-S struggled offensively and was outscored 12-5 for a 27-20 deficit after three quarters.
Alexander Albarran’s eight points led C-S in scoring.

Lady Panthers Win two Straight
C-S, now 6-2, trailed by a 25-22 count at halftime, but held the Tigers to three free throws and a basket in the third quarter while scoring 19 points at the other end for a 41-30 lead entering the final quarter.
The two teams then struggled offensively in the final quarter, combining for 10 points, however C-S held on for the win.
Kendal Reitz, behind a 10-for-11 performance from two-point range, had a strong game with 21 points and four assists to lead C-S. Annabelle Edwards added 10 points and five rebounds.

C-S Overcomes Huge Scoring Outburst by South Haven Jr.
The Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team enjoyed a balanced scoring attack and overcame a near school record scoring performance by South Haven’s Ly’Nique Cunningham in a 51-47 win over the Rams at South Haven High School January 6.
Cunningham scored 41 of South Haven’s 47 points.
According to South Haven Athletic Director Chris Gerlach, the Ram junior was one point shy of tying her school record of 42 points she set last year.
C-S took a 38-31 lead into the fourth quarter, however Cunningham scored all 16 of South Haven’s points in the quarter to bring the home team closer, but the Lady Panthers held on for the win.
Cunningham also scored all 10 Ram points in the third quarter.
C-S, which outscored South Haven 17-9 at the free throw line, made 7-of-12 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter.
C-S, behind six points from Kendal Reitz and six points from Annabelle Edwards including a 4-for-4 performance at the free throw line, used a strong second quarter to move in front 29-21 at halftime.
South Haven led 10-8 after one quarter.
Junior Annabelle Edwards, who was 4-for-9 from two-point range, led four Lady Panthers in double figure scoring with 16 points to go with 12 rebounds.
Holly Talbert, Kendal Reitz and Addy Reeves each chipped in with 11 points.

Six wrestlers place; Malcolm Smith
is tournament MVP
The Climax-Scotts wrestling team had six placers including three who placed first at the John Burton Classic in Olivet January 10.
C-S finished third out of 20 schools and just 1 1/2 points behind second place finishing Schoolcraft despite missing four starters.
Malcolm Smith (215-pound weight class), Tyler Bradley (113) and Gixxer Blair (175) all placed first. Cooper Dinse (285) placed second, Lincoln Bartholomew (120) placed third and Jaques Porlier (144) placed fourth.
Smith was 3-0 on the day and MVP of the tournament. He won all three matches by pins, including a pin in 1:29 in the finals over Hanover Horton’s Austyn Hocter who took third place in the state tournament last year.
Bradley was 4-0 and won all four of his matches by pins as well.
Blair was 4-0, winning two matches by pins, a 16-1 technical fall and a 12-9 decision in the finals over Olivet’s Kellen Rabakon who was undefeated according to C-S coach Jason Wade.
Dinse was 3-1, winning two matches by pins and one match by a 10-1 major decision.
Bartholomew was 4-1, winning three matches by pins and the other by a 14-6 major decision.
Porlier was 2-2, winning both matches by pins.
Olivet won the tournament with 249.5 points.

C-S Falls to Union City, Springport in Big 8 Quad
The Climax-Scotts wrestling team dropped a 55-24 decision to Union City and a 64-12 match to Springport January 7 in a Big 8 quad at Union City.
Tyler Bradley (113), with a pin in 43 seconds, Malcolm Smith (215), by a pin in 2:19, Cooper Dinse (285) by a pin in 1:13 and Gixxer Blair (175) by a forfeit, recorded the wins for C-S.
Malcolm Smith (215) and Cooper Dinse (285) won the only two matches for C-S against Springport, both by forfeit.
