Michigan Law Professor Julian Arato has been nominated to serve as a vice president of the American Society of International Law (ASIL), while Lecturer Julianne Marley has been nominated to the ASIL Executive Council.
Following confirmation at the group’s annual meeting in April, Arato will be one of four vice presidents serving two-year terms. Marley will serve a three-year term on the Executive Council.
“We are delighted to congratulate Julian and Julianne on their leadership appointments at ASIL,” said Neel U. Sukhatme, David A. Breach Dean of Law. “Their scholarship and practice reflect the depth of talent at Michigan Law and enrich our students’ education and global reputation. These nominations build on our long tradition of leadership in international law.”
Professor Karima Bennoune, ’94, is currently serving as an ASIL vice president, so she and Arato will serve together for one year as the group’s two vice presidents from academia; two other vice presidents are practicing lawyers. Bennoune will also co-chair this year’s annual meeting, a role Arato filled in 2024.
In addition, another Michigan Law professor, Timothy Dickinson, ’79, currently serves as a counsellor to ASIL.
“International law is at an inflection point,” Arato said. “The postwar international legal order is under greater strain than ever before—one need only turn on the news to see a new crisis emerge. Yet it is in such times that international law is most important.
“The society has been the preeminent forum for American international lawyers for over a century, and reinvesting in its work has rarely been so vital. It’s an honor to be entrusted with a role in steering its course as vice president over the coming years—and a pleasure to do so with great Michigan colleagues like Julianne, Tim, and Karima.”
Marley added, “ASIL is unique among professional societies in bringing together practicing international lawyers, academics, and students to carry out its important work. I’m delighted to serve on the executive council, and look forward to deepening connections between the society and our community here at Michigan Law.”
Arato is extensively involved in ASIL. He is a member of the board of editors of its American Journal of International Law; and has served as a member of the executive council, as co-chair of the international economic law interest group, and as co-chair of the international organizations iInterest group.
Arato is also a member of the executive board of the European Journal of International Law and a co-editor of the EJIL:Talk! blog. He has previously served as chair of the Academic Forum on Investor-State Dispute Settlement. Michigan Law hosted the 2023 forum under Arato’s leadership.
He is an author of International Law: Cases and Materials, 8th ed. and International Trade Law Through the Cases, 2025 ed. His research focuses on public international law, international investment law and arbitration, international trade, contracts, corporations, and legal theory.
At Michigan Law, Arato is faculty director of the Center for International and Comparative Law, and director of the Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) Program. He is also director of the Program on Law and the Global Economy,
Marley currently serves as co-chair of ASIL’s international economic law interest group. A lecturer at Michigan Law, she is counsel in the international dispute resolution group at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP in New York City.
Her practice encompasses international arbitration, litigation, and public international law. She regularly speaks and publishes on international arbitration and international investment law-related issues.
Marley maintains an active pro bono practice focused on representing clients in asylum proceedings and immigration-related matters, as well as pro bono work related to human rights and fair trial advocacy.
ASIL is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, educational membership organization founded in 1906 and chartered by Congress in 1950. ASIL holds special consultative status to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and is a constituent society of the American Council of Learned Societies.
The society is headquartered in Washington, DC, and its members from more than 100 nations include attorneys, academics, corporate counsel, judges, representatives of governments and nongovernmental organizations, international civil servants, students, and others interested in international law.
