Heckman is an educator whose passion, creativity, and leadership have made a lasting impact on students and staff alike.
As an Engage teacher, Heckman inspires students to think boldly, solve real-world problems, and create masterful projects that merge curiosity with innovation. Her classroom is a hub of STEM learning, where students are encouraged to explore, experiment, and embrace the joy of discovery.
One of Heckman’s most notable accomplishments is her leadership in coordinating Birmingham Covington’s schoolwide MakerFaire, a signature event where every student designs, builds, and showcases a personal maker project. This celebration of creativity and perseverance is a highlight of the school year and a testament to Jesse’s vision, organization, and energy. Beyond her work with students, Heckman is a leader among her colleagues, generously sharing innovative teaching practices across the district.
In presenting the award at a ceremony at the school’s media center on Jan. 28, Evan Pappas, partner at Giroux Pappas Trial Attorneys, shared, “Jesse Heckman represents everything our Exceptional Educator program stands for—creativity, dedication, and a genuine commitment to helping students grow. Educators like Jesse shape the future, and we are honored to recognize the incredible impact she has at Birmingham Covington School.”
The Exceptional Educator Program is a community initiative created by Giroux Pappas Trial Attorneys to recognize and celebrate outstanding teachers across Michigan. Each month, the firm awards a $1,000 donation to an educator who goes above and beyond for their students, colleagues, and school community. Now in its fourth year, the program reflects Giroux Pappas’ ongoing commitment to education, community involvement, and honoring those who make a lasting difference in the lives of Michigan students.
