JVs fall short at G-A, defeat Gobles


The Climax-Scotts JV boys basketball team pulled to within two points late but could not overtake Galesburg-Augusta in a 39-35 loss at G-A February 2.

Trailing 33-27 entering the fourth quarter, C-S chipped away at the Ram lead and pulled to within 35-33 with 1:18 left.

G-A scored a basket with 34.3 seconds left to secure the win.

The Panthers, now 9-3, led by a 12-11 count after one quarter.

G-A responded with a 18-7 surge in the second quarter to take a 29-19 lead at halftime.

Alexander Albarran-Aguilar and Ashton Heighton each scored 11 points to lead C-S.

C-S Gets Back in Win Column with Win Over Gobles


The Climax-Scotts boys JV basketball team got back into the win column with a 42-33 victory over Gobles January 28 at Gobles after suffering a loss to Mendon January 21 
A strong second half helped the Panthers to the win.

C-S, behind eight points from Alexander Albarran including a pair of three-point baskets, outscored Gobles 17-11 to take a 32-31 lead into the final quarter.

The Panthers enjoyed a strong defensive fourth quarters, holding the home team to just two-point basket.

Gobles led by a 10-8 count after one quarter and 20-15 at halftime.

Albarran-Aguilar, who connected on four three-point baskets, led C-S in scoring with 19 points.

Aaden Krick qualifies for
JV State Finals powerlifting meet


Climax-Scotts High School sophomore Aaden Krick qualified for the JV State Finals at the regional powerlifting meet at Napolean January 31.

Krick placed second in the JV  242-pound weight class with a 355-pound squat lift, a 225-pound bench press and a 380-pound deadlift for a total weight of 960 pounds.

Blake Buddemeir and Aiden Klushman competed in the varsity competition.

Buddemeir placed fifth in the 165-pound weight class, recording a 250-pound squat lift, a 200-pound bench press, and a 330-pound deadlift for a total weight of 780 pounds.

Klushman placed eighth at the varsity 194-pound weight class. He had a 340-pound squat lift, a 185-pound bench press, and a 350-pound deadlift for a total weight of 875 pounds.

C-S finished with nine points in 16th place out of a field of 22 schools in the varsity competition and the JVs totaled nine points in 15th place out of 18 schools.

C-S coach Kevin Langs said the powerlifters may compete at a February 14 regional event in a bid to secure additional state final qualifiers.


JV girls basketball team climbs above .500


The Climax-Scotts girls JV basketball team moved back over the .500 mark with a 49-23 win over Gobles February 2 at Gobles and a 36-13 win over Athens January 31 at Athens in a makeup game.

C-S, now 5-4, enjoyed strong defense and contributions from multiple players to secure the win.

The Panther defense held Gobles to single digits each quarter, however C-S took charge in the second half when the visitors outscored the Tigers 28-15.

Alyssa Morrison, with 14 points, and Kyla Etheridge, with 11 points, reached double figures in scoring, however Kameroyn Blair and Nina Garcia-Delgado each chipped in with eight points.

C-S Takes Charge in 2nd Quarter in Win Over Athens


C-S led by a 7-3 count after one quarter but took charge in the second quarter by holding Athens scoreless while enjoying its largest offensive quarter for a 21-3 halftime lead in a 36-13 win over Athens.

C-S led by a 26-9 margin entering the fourth quarter.

Kameroyn Blair scored 13 points and Alyssa Morrison chipped in with nine to pace C-S in scoring.

Ella Carley’s six points led Athens in scoring.

Lady Panthers drop two games


The Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team responded to a 34-29 loss to Athens January 31 with a 48-44 win over Gobles February 2 at Gobles.

C-S, now 8-5, got off to a good start at Gobles, moving in front 13-4 after one quarter behind nine points from freshman Alyse Langs.

C-S took a 29-19 halftime lead on the strength of seven points by Holly Talbert and five by Kendal Reitz.

Gobles responded with a strong third quarter, pulling to 37-36 entering the final stanza.

C-S held off the Tiger fourth quarter rally by making all four free throws.

Langs finished with 14 points and six steals and Holly Talbert scored 12 points to go with eight boards and two assists.

Athens Tops C-S


A shorthanded Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team couldn’t overcome a sluggish offensive performance and 27 turnovers in a 34-29 loss to Athens January 31 at Athens High School in a makeup game.

C-S, playing without senior Sophie Braithwaite for some time because of an injury, played at Athens without leading scorer Holly Talbert who was injured at Paw Paw the previous game.

The Lady Panthers fell behind 9-8 after one quarter but responded with a 10-5 burst in the second quarter to take a 18-14 lead into halftime. 

Athens held C-S to just two baskets in the third quarter and took a 28-22 lead into the final quarter. 

Addy Reeves scored seven points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead C-S.

Mallory Kincaid’s 17 points led Athens.

C-S Drops Non-League Game to Paw Paw


The Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team could not overcome a slow first half offensively, dropping a 56-47 decision to Paw Paw January 28 at Paw Paw High School.

C-S fell behind 16-7 after one quarter and managed just one basket by Addy Reeves in the second quarter for a 26-9 deficit at halftime.

The C-S offense, behind six points from Holly Talbert and five points from Kendal Reitz, picked up in the third quarter when the Lady Panthers outscored Paw Paw 21-18 to pull to within 44-30 after three quarters.

Seven points from Alyse Langs and six points from Addy Reeves helped C-S outscore Paw Paw 17-12 in the fourth quarter but the Panthers could not overtake the home team.

C-S was led by Addy Reeves’ 12 points and 12 rebounds. Holly Talbert added 10 points, Langs contributed nine points and Annabelle Edwards scored eight points to go with seven rebounds.

Wrestling team wins six matches


The Climax-Scotts wrestling team enjoyed a strong week, winning a home dual match over the Portage Northern B team January 28 and a first place finish at the Jonesville Invite January 31 with a 5-0.

Tyler Bradley (113- and 120-pound weight class), Malcolm Smith (215), Gixxer Blair (175) and Cooper Dinse (285) were all 5-0 on the day at the Jonesville Invite.

Bradley won by pins in 45 seconds, 2:00 and 2:53, a forfeit, and a 17-0 technical fall.

Smith won by pins in 35 and 31 seconds and three forfeits.

Blair won by four pins in 2:00, 1:20, 53 seconds and 49 seconds and a forfeit.

Dinse won by three pins in 18 seconds, 53 seconds, and 2:23, and two forfeits.
