Two Lady Rams compete at
conference tournament


Two members of the Galesburg-Augusta girls wrestling team competed at the Southwest Girls Conference Tournament February 7 at Plainwell.

Alexis Thomas (155-pound weight class) and Caitlyn Valadez  (170) both posted 2-2 records but did not place.

JV boys basketball team suffers first loss


The Galesburg-Augusta boys JV basketball team responded quickly to its first loss of the season with a 81-59 victory over Martin February 5 at G-A High School.

The Rams, now 15-1, were led by Connor Welker’s 26 points. Jerome Bailey added 15 points, and Lucas Broxholm chipped in with 13 points.

G-A suffered its first loss of the season at Lawton February 4, 46-43.

Jerome Bailey scored 13 points and Connor Welker added 11 points.

Boys basketball team building momentum


The Galesburg-Augusta boys varsity basketball team moved over the .500 mark with its fourth win in a row February 6, a 72-41 win over Martin at Martin.

The Rams relied heavily on the three-point shot, knocking down 11 triples.

G-A, now 8-7, took more three-point attempts (11-for-34) then two-point tries (15-for-30), shooting 40.6 percent (26-for-64) overall from the floor.

A pair of three-point baskets by Hunter Pritchard and eight points from Hayden Pritchard helped G-A move in front 24-12 after one quarter.

The G-A defense held Martin to four free throws and one basket in the second quarter, leading to a 41-18 halftime cushion.

The Rams entered the final quarter with a 56-28 advantage.

Hunter Pritchard, who connected on four three-point baskets, led G-A with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Hayden Pritchard added 11 points and seven rebounds.

G-A Secures Overtime Win over Lawton


The Galesburg-Augusta varsity boys basketball team scored all eight overtime points from the free throw line and held off Lawton 41-37 February 4 at Lawton.

The two teams were tied 33-33 at the end of regulation.

The Rams, who were  11-for-17 from the free throw line in regulation, made 8-of-10 free throws in the extra session.

Dontrell Bowden meshed 5-of-6 free throws in the extra session and Giovanni Evans was 3-for-4.

The Rams led by a 15-9 count after one quarter but Lawton responded with a big second quarter to move in front 24-21 at halftime.

Both teams struggled offensively the second half, with the Rams pulling in front 27-26 after three quarters and Lawton outscoring G-A 7-6 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Giovanni Evans, who was 5-for-12 from two-point range, led G-A in scoring with 16 points. Dontrell Bowden added 13 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Girls JV basketball team evens
record with two wins


The Galesburg-Augusta girls JV basketball team evened its record at 6-6 with two wins.

G-A defeated Kalamazoo Hackett 35-22 February 9 at Hackett and downed Martin 38-26 February 5 at G-A High School.

Sienna Owens scored 11 points to lead G-A in the win over Hackett. Sophia Dohm added eight points and Jilayah Henry -Phillips and Miley Coburn each contributed six points.

G-A Holds off Martin


The Ram girls JV basketball team posted a 38-26 win over Martin February 5.

Sophia Dohm’s 14 points led G-A in scoring, Lillian Jones and Kaylin Wetzel each scored six points and Sienna Owens added five points.

Hackett breaks G-A’s 3-game winning streak

A big start helped Kalamazoo Hackett Prep to a 66-25 win over the Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team February 9 at Hackett.

G-A, now 10-4, saw a three-game winning streak come to an end with the loss.

A 19-0 run in the first quarter helped the Irish to a 23-6 lead after one quarter.

The Irish followed the big first quarter run with a 12-0 spurt in the second quarter to take a 45-10 lead at halftime.

Hackett’s press forced G-A into 13 first half turnovers with most resulting in Hackett scores.

G-A finished the game with 17 G-A turnovers.

Hackett’s Lucy Young scored 29 points in the first half, scoring in the lane, from the three-point line (5 triples) and at the free throw line (4-for-6).

Hackett enjoyed a 6-0 run in the third quarter, but the Rams were competitive and were outscored 10-9 for a 55-19 deficit after three quarters.

G-A shot 30 percent from two point range and 17 percent from three point range.

Grace Gibson’s eight points and five rebounds led G-A.

G-A Wins Overtime Thriller Over Martin


Jeni Klimp came up with two steals and scored four of her six points in overtime and freshman Rayonna Alexander sank two free throws in the extra session, helping the Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team to a thrilling 40-38 win over Martin in overtime February 6.

Martin jumped out to an 8-1 lead by hitting two three-point baskets.

G-A’s Grace Gibson scored five points in the quarter and Emily Coleman and Brooklyn James each added two points, pulling the Rams to within 10-9 after one quarter.

Alexander hit a three-point basket to open the second quarter, giving G-A its first lead. 

G-A went scoreless for the next 5 minutes but the defense held Martin to six points and the Rams trailed by a 16-14 margin at halftime.

Martin kept the lead for the entire 3rd quarter, pulling in front  25-18 before the Rams scored the final six points of the quarter to trail 25-24.

The fourth quarter saw six lead changes and two ties with Martin’s Anna Jager hitting a three-point basket with a handful of seconds to play to send the game into overtime.

Jenisyn Klimp, playing with four fouls, made two steals and converted both into layup baskets in overtime, giving G-A a 38-34 lead with two minutes to play.

Alexander made a free throw to give G-A a 39-34 lead. 

Martin closed to 39-38 and Alexander hit another free throw for a 40-38 lead with just seconds to play. 

A desperation shot by Martin at the buzzer was well off its target and the Rams escaped with a 40-38 win.

Gibson finished with 11 points and six rebounds to lead G-A.

James added 10 points, nine rebounds, two assists and five steals.

G-A Takes Down Coloma


The Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team received contributions throughout the line up, helping the team to a 57-21 win over Coloma February 4 at G-A High School.
Every player on the roster saw playing time.

With a 48-17 lead after three quarters, G-A coach Katlyn Dunithan sat all her starters in the fourth quarter.

G-A led 8-2 halfway through the first quarter and entered the second quarter with a 14-8 lead.

Senior Grace Gibson scored four points, Rayonna Alexander and Kayla Bortolussi each scored three points and Emily Coleman and Jeni Klimp had two points in the opening frame.

The Lady Rams outscored Coloma16-6 in the second quarter for a 30-14 lead at halftime.

Gibson had the hot shooting hand in the stanza, making three baskets from the floor and making all five of her free throw attempts for 11 points.

Bortolussi and Brooklyn James each added a basket and Coburn had a free throw.

Gibson’s night ended midway through the third quarter. She scored two more baskets inside and a free throw for a 6-for-6 and 7-for-15 from two-point range for a game high 20 points.

Alexander, James and Jilaya Henry-Phillips each added two baskets in the third quarter, rounding out G-A’s 18-3 burst for a 48-17 lead going into the fourth quarter.
James scored four points in the and Wende Trines and Anni Steimann each sinking a basket in the fourth quarter.

James added 10 points and five rebounds.
