Big crowd enjoys 2026 C-S
Hall of Fame ceremony February 13
After a three-year absence, a large crowd enjoyed the return of the Climax-Scotts Community Schools Hall of Fame ceremony at Climax-Scotts Jr./Sr. High School February 13 in between the boys JV and varsity basketball games against Mendon.
The Hall of Fame ceremony, recognizing individual state champions at C-S, was scheduled to be held January 23, but was postponed because of poor weather.
Over a three-year period former C-S Athletic Director Kevin Langs replaced the Climax-Scotts Community Schools Hall of Fame plaques with new plaques after the wall the hall of fame plaques hung on, were exposed to water from roof leaks over the years. A number of pictures in the plaques were damaged from the water.
Recognized February 13 was:
• Dennis VanMiddlesworth, C-S’ first ever state MHSAA champion in any sport in the 880-yard run in 1971.
• The 2006 state champion 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Tyler Langs, Jordan Langs, Dallas Halasz and Scott Bogard.
• Deryk Soule, 1991 state champion wrestler.
• Brian Davis, 1991 state champion wrestler.
• Alex Lodes, a two-time 100-meter dash state champion in 2012 and 2013. He was also state champion in the 200-meter dash in 2012.
• Justin Todd, a 2004 state champion cross country runner.
• The 2013 4x100-meter relay team consisting of Alex Lodes, Kirk Gibson, Sam Eshuis and Zach Nabozny.
A reception followed the Hall of Fame ceremony.
String of team district championships
ends at four for C-S
A four-year run of capturing a team district championship ended for the Climax-Scotts wrestling team when Galesburg-Augusta topped the Panthers 48-30 in the team district championship match February 11 at Bellevue High School.
C-S advanced to the district championship match with a 45-35 win over Bellevue earlier and G-A defeated Vermontville Maple Valley 42-36.
C-S, which split with Martin in the co-op following last season, won the team district championship the last four years as part of the co-op with Martin.
However a determined G-A squad flipped three results from a 45-35 loss to C-S December 17 in the district championship match to help end the run of district championships for C-S and give G-A its first team district championship since 2001.
Brecken Vickery, who lost a match by a pin in a December 17 match to C-S at 132 pounds, won his match at 126 pounds over C-S’ Nate Arnett by an 8-6 decision in the district championship match.
Hunter Kendall won his match at 132 pounds by a pin in 26 seconds in the district championship match after losing in December by a pin in 4:12 wrestling at 138 pounds.
Lance Shoup flipped his result from a December match against C-S’ Dean Parks by defeating the C-S senior by an 8-6 win in the district championship match after losing by a 8-3 decision earlier in the season.
“We’ve been accustomed to winning a lot of team districts. We had a team that could do it again this year. We just came up a little short. We had a lot of matches that went our way last time (in a win over G-A December 17) that didn’t go (our way) this time. A lot of swing matches. You’ve got to win those and unfortunately we were on the wrong side of that,” explained C-S coach Jason Wade.
“I told the guys we’ve got to regroup. Bad days happen. It’s how you respond to those days. We can lay down for the rest of the season or we can come back fighting hard and come back and fight another day and that’s what we’re going to do,” adds Wade.
After learning G-A won its first team district championship since 2001, Wade said he was happy for C-S’ neighbors to the north.
“If anyone were to beat us, I’m proud that Galesburg did because they’ve come a long way. It’s been a long time since they’ve been able to achieve something like this. So kudos to that program and what they’re doing over there. They’re doing some good things. I’m a fan of wrestling. I love to see programs do well and they’re heading in the right direction,” adds Wade.
The C-S wins came from Gixxer Blair (175) by a pin in 30 seconds, Easton VanMiddlesworth (190) by a pin in 1:30, Malcolm Smith (285) by a pin in 1:18 and Tyler Bradley (113) and Cooper Dinse (215) by forfeits.
In the semifinal match C-S fell behind 29-0 before winning eight of the next nine matches to claim a 45-35 win over Bellevue.
Gixxer Blair (175), with a win by a forfeit, Easton VanMiddlesworth (190), by a pin in 18 seconds, Malcolm Smith (215) by a forfeit win, and Cooper Dinse (285), by a pin in 54 seconds, pulled C-S to within 29-24.
Bellevue won the next match by a forfeit but Tyler Bradley (113) with a pin in 54 seconds, Lincoln Bartholomew (120) with a pin in 59 seconds, Nate Arnett (126), with an 18-3 technical fall and Gavin Rogers (132) by a 14-2 major decision, closed the match strong for C-S to help secure the win.

C-S drops two, looks to end
regular season on positive note
Cold shooting throughout the game and turnovers contributed to a 57-26 loss to Hopkins for the Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team February 16 on the road.
C-S, 4-13, could not get into an offensive groove in all four quarters.
C-S’ cold shooting challenges started in the first quarter when the team managed to make 30 percent of its attempts overall (3-10) and fell behind by a 16-8 count after one quarter.
The Panthers’ shooting chilled even more in the second quarter when the visitors only made 25 percent (2-8) of their floor attempts, leading to a 28-12 halftime deficit.
Nine turnovers and 2-for-9 shooting overall from the floor in the third quarter led to a 46-22 deficit entering the fourth quarter.
For the game, C-S finished shooting 29 percent (7-24) from two-point range, 14 percent (2-14) from behind the three-point line and 24 percent (9-38) overall.
The Panthers had 22 turnovers.
Hopkins improved to 3-15 with the win.
Tye Chambers led C-S in scoring with nine points.

Shorthanded Panthers Fall to Mendon
While another starter was missing from the lineup, the short handed Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team produced a strong effort only to come up short against Mendon 71-61 February 13 on Hall of Fame and Winterfest night at C-S.
Playing most of the season without scoring threat Mason Shannon (ankle injury), C-S coach Kenny Sattler lost starter Hunter LaSala to an MHSAA eligibility rule two weeks ago. Last Friday, Maddox Wyman, another starter and strong rebounder and inside scoring threat, sat out against Mendon because of illness.
C-S battled the Hornets hard all four quarters, but could not slow down Ryder and Owen Gorham in the fourth quarter.
The twin brothers combined for 19 points (Ryder scored 10 points and Owen scored nine) in the final stanza, helping the Hornets hold off the pesky Panthers.
C-S trailed the Hornets 52-43 after three quarters, but three straight free throws by Nyle Sattler, followed by a three-point basket 38 seconds later by the Panther sophomore pulled C-S to within 54-51 with 5:59 left in the game.
The three-point deficit equaled the closet C-S could get.
Another triple by Nyle Sattler with 4:23 left in the fourth quarter pulled C-S to within 60-57.
A free throw by Liam LaSala with 1:50 reduced C-S’ deficit to five points (66-61) with 1:50 left in the game, but the Hornet defense held C-S without a point the rest of the way.
The game was close the entire way.
Mendon led by a 13-11 count after one quarter.
The two teams played even in the second quarter, however nine C-S turnovers in the second quarter reduced their offensive chances and C-S trailed 27-25 at halftime.
C-S shot 46 percent (22-48) overall from the floor, but made 50 percent (7-14) of its three-point attempts and 44 percent (15-34) two-point tries.
C-S held the upper hand under the boards by a 36-33 margin, however Mendon won the battle under the offensive boards (11-8).
C-S had 22 turnovers compared to five by Mendon.
Nyle Sattler finished with 18 points and four rebounds, and Liam LaSala had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

C-S, behind six points from Tye Chambers and six points from Dane Sattler, moved in front 23-11 after one quarter.

Lady Panther coach pleased
with effort despite recent loss
While a 51-39 loss to Kalamazoo Hackett February 16 at Climax-Scotts that snapped a six-game winning streak was disappointing for the Lady Panthers, how the team battled and played against a larger, ranked school was pleasing to C-S coach Chip Paddock.
With a roster filled with returning starters or players that saw significant playing time last year when the team advanced to the regional championship game before losing in overtime by one point, C-S coach Chip Paddock feels playing ranked teams like Hackett in the regular season can be beneficial in the Lady Panthers’ push to enjoy another special postseason.
Hackett, which entered the game ranked 8th in the most recent Michigan Sports Writers Division 3 poll, improved to 15-3 with the win.
“This is part of our plan, right? I mean, that’s a division three ranked team in the state, and they have been for years. They’ve got a great program, they’re coached very well. So we knew going into this thing, we want to be some where special in March, and playing games like this only helps,” offered Paddock.
C-S, now 13-6, pushed Hackett at times, especially in the first half when C-S took a 15-11 lead after one quarter.
But Irish sophomore Lucy Young and Hackett’s defense proved to be too much for the home team.
Young, just a sophomore, dominated in the first half when she scored 19 of her teams’ 28 points helping Hackett to a 28-21 lead at halftime.
C-S made the Irish sophomore work harder for her shots in the second half, but she finished with 30 points.
Paddock realizes his team will likely be pushed in the post season and liked how his team responded to the challenges they faced against Hackett.
“We’re not looking at the score, or anything like that, and then reflecting on that. We’re reflecting on our effort, how we’ve been able to stay connected. We’re just a resilient group right now,” points out the Lady Panther coach.
Hackett turned up the heat defensively in the second half, resulting in some frustration at the offensive end for the Panthers.
C-S knocked down just 3-of-11 attempts from the floor in the third quarter and trailed by a 39-28 margin after three quarters.
While the Lady Panthers pushed Hackett and battled hard in the fourth quarter, fouls and three turnovers prevented a comeback.
A basket by Holly Talbert on a drive through the lane with 5:24 left in the fourth quarter pulled C-S to within 42-34, but that was the closest the home team managed to get.
Annabelle Edwards led C-S in scoring with 15 points.

While the Panther offense stalled in the second quarter against Mendon, C-S closed out the Hornets with a strong second half, outscoring the visitors 34-22.
