Wrestling team celebrates district championship victory
While Galesburg-Augusta wrestling coach Sam Blyveis has enjoyed team district championships at other schools he has coached at, the first year Ram coach cherished the opportunity to watch the wrestling team he took over last summer develop into a team that believed it could win big matches.
And did the Rams do that February 11 in the team districts at Bellevue.
After taking down Vermontville Maple Valley 42-36 in the semifinals, G-A ended Climax-Scotts’ string of winning four team district championships as part of a co-op with Martin with a 48-30 win over the Panthers for G-A’s first team district championship since 2001.
Blyveis pointed to three matches G-A flipped from a 45-35 loss to C-S December 17 and won in the team district championship match against the Panthers, including two by a pin as a key.
Brecken Vickery, who lost by a pin in the December 17 loss to C-S at 132 pounds, won his match at 126 pounds over C-S’ Nate Arnett by an 8-6 decision in the district championship match.
“Brecken Vickery’s job tonight was to not get pinned. He getting the win, was icing on the cake. He got pinned last time,” said Blyveis.
Hunter Kendall won his match at 132 pounds by a pin in 26 seconds in the district championship match after losing in December by a pin in 4:12 wrestling at 138 pounds.
Lance Shoup flipped his result from a 8-3 loss in December to C-S’ Dean Parks by defeating the C-S senior by an 8-6 decision in the district championship match.
“They really wanted it. We focus on goals, both as a team and individually. And everyone knew what they’re job was coming in. Of all the teams that I’ve coached, I don’t know that I’ve ever had a team with so many people that I gave a job to, that came through and did their job. We had two or three matches that we lost the last time (in December to C-S), where we got pinned, where we not only stayed off our backs but we flipped it on them and won the matches,” said Blyveis, who helped guide Fowlerville to the state finals two years including a runnerup finish in 2024-2025 as an assistant coach and also helped Gaylord to the state semifinals as an assistant coach before he went to Fowlerville.
Senior Jonah Ranes said he and his teammates were focused and determined if there was a rematch with C-S after the Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op team defeated G-A 65-12 at last year’s Jim Wade Family Classic.
“They came out and destroyed us last year and all the years before that, so I wanted to get them back,” said Ranes.
“What it means to me, is what it means to the kids. I’ve been fortunate enough to be at some programs where we’ve had a lot of success. Trying to teach these kids why I want them to work hard and why I want them to have faith in the process and how they’ve got to trust the system. Now they get a chance to see the results of their work. It’s not me, it’s getting to see the kids like this. Because you don’t see a whole lot of that in recent history with G-A which is unfortunate,” said Blyveis as his team celebrated with the team district championship trophy.
Owen Cowles (120) by a pin in 23 seconds, Colton Robertson (144), by a pin in 1:26, Jonah Ranes (165) by a pin in 1:10, and Jaxsen Ray (138), Jaxsen Kasten (106), and Alexis Thomas (157) all with forfeit wins, won the other matches for G-A.
