Growing up, Leann Hadeed watched her family suffer from an unjust system in Syria.
“I couldn't do anything to help them, which made me feel hopeless,” she said. “Going to law school was my way of helping maintain justice and fight for the change I want and not wait for other people to fight for me.
Hadeed said she’s passionate about the law “because, for me, the law is an avenue for freedom.
“Being able to practice law is a privilege that will help me achieve the goals I’ve had ever since I was a child and make the difference I’ve wanted to see.”
Earning her undergraduate degree in political science and government from Oakland University, with a minor in philosophy, Hadeed took several law-related classes that prepared her for going into law school.
And as vice president of the Pre-Law Club, she helped other students like herself navigate the LSAT and the law school admissions process. She also was in Honors College, the Political Science Honors Society, and the Arab Student Organization.
Hadeed spent two undergraduate years as a member of the student congress.
In her first year, as director of the executive platform, she was involved in hosting campus-wide events to increase engagement, and in bridging relationships between student organizations and the student congress.
In her second year, she served as director of financial affairs, managing the budget, doing payroll, and managing purchases.
Hadeed also participated in many cultural organizations during undergrad, adding it was “extremely rewarding to be able to bring people together.”
Hadeed started at Detroit Mercy Law in August, where she particularly enjoys the friendship of her classmates.
“I feel we’ve cultivated such a supportive community on campus — everyone is extremely nice and enjoyable to be around,” she said. “I hope to continue to grow our community in the next three years.
Hadeed currently is open to almost all areas of law, and her career goal after graduation will be to work at a law firm that allows her to venture into many different fields of law.
An alumna of Waterford Kettering High School, Hadeed is one of three siblings and the only daughter.
“My younger brother, who is 15, has a drive like no other and he motivates me to try harder. My older brother, who is 25, goes to dental school in Cleveland. I’ve never met someone who works as hard as him,” she “Both have had a great influence on my life.
“My parents have always taught me and my siblings there is no goal we can't achieve if we work towards it and to never let people convince us otherwise —and I truly believe my parents' support is what has helped me, and my siblings achieve our goals.”
