Girls basketball team closes out
regular season impressively
An impressive win over one of the SCAA’s top teams followed by a lopsided win sent the Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team into the district tournament with high optimism levels.
C-S closed the regular season with a 46-9 win over Pittsford February 26 at Pittsford two days after clipping SCAA East Division leaders Hillsdale Academy, 45-43.
The Lady Panthers complete the regular season with a 15-6 record.
Pittsford managed just two baskets from the floor - one three-pointer in the second quarter and one two-point basket in the third quarter.
Pittsford was held to three free throws in the first quarter, and C-S took a 10-3 lead into the second quarter.

Holly Talbert scored six points and Alyse Langs added five points in the third quarter, helping the Panthers to a 42-9 lead after three quarters.
C-S held the home team without a point in the fourth quarter.
Reitz, who was 7-for-10 from two-point range, finished with 16 points and Talbert, who was 5-for-7 from two-point range, scored 10 points for C-S.

2nd Half Comeback Lifts C-S to Win over Hillsdale Academy
An inspiring second half comeback that featured an impressive defensive effort, lifted the Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball team to a 45-43 win over Hillsdale Academy February 24 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School on senior-parent night.
Seniors Sophie Braithwaite, Chloe Czuk, Ashlynn Gilbert, Adalynn Reeves and Holly Talbert and their parents were recognized before the game.
After falling behind by a 29-15 count at halftime, the Lady Panthers came out determined to make a comeback in the second half.
C-S coach Chip Paddock said the message to his team at halftime was slow down and play the style of basketball the team is accustomed to playing.
“We hadn’t played, we’ve been off since last Monday. So they (Hillsdale Academy) came in and sped us up a little bit. All the credit to them. We just needed to get to where we needed to be. Get the ball into the hands of the people we needed to. Slow down and just execute,” observed Paddock.
The C-S coach was impressed how his team came back in the second half against a strong Colts team that came into the game with a 16-3 record and were undefeated in the SCAA East Division, leading to the East Division title.
It was defense that fueled the comeback effort.
“Once we got in here at halftime, we talked about the message. We went out there and executed offensively. Defensively, we turned up the heat a little bit in the second half as well, was able to pressure them and get them to put the ball on the floor,” said Paddock.
C-S forced Hillsdale Academy into seven third quarter turnovers and held the visitors to 2-for-7 shooting from the floor.
Hillsdale Academy took a 32-18 lead at the 6:29 mark on a three-point basket, but C-S scored the next eight points to pull to within 32-27 with 3:51 left in the stanza.
A three-point basket by Sophie Braithwaite with 0.8 seconds left in the quarter pulled the home team to within 34-32 entering the fourth quarter.
After trailing since the 6:03 mark of the first quarter (4-2), C-S finally caught the Colts on a drive to the basket and score by Holly Talbert that tied the game 34-34 with 6:25 left in the game.
Talbert gave C-S its first lead since the Panthers scored the first basket of the game by making a basket at the 5:34 mark that gave the home team a 36-34 lead.
Two straight baskets by Hillsdale Academy gave the Colts a 40-36 lead. The rest of the game was close and filled with tension.
Baskets by Annabelle Edwards and Talbert tied the game at 40-40 and a free throw by Edwards with 1:32 left gave the home team a 41-40 lead.
The Colts lost opportunities to overtake C-S over the next 59 seconds, missing a basket and two free throws.
C-S’ Kendal Reitz split a pair of free throws with 1:00 left to give the Panthers a 42-40 lead and then the Lady Panther junior sank two free throws 27.4 seconds later to extend the lead to 44-40.
The tough C-S defense forced another Colt turnover with 34.3 seconds left and Reitz split a pair of free throws with 33.3 seconds left, bumping the lead to 45-40.
Hillsdale Academy missed two straight floor attempts. After C-S missed two free throws with 16.3 seconds left, Darby Hoisfall connected on a three-point basket with four seconds left to bring the Colts to within 45-43.
Hillsdale Academy could not force a C-S late turnover and the Panthers held on for the win.
“The girls were obviously playing for the bigger purpose. We’re playing for Climax-Scotts and we’re playing for our seniors tonight. A lot of heart, a lot of grit. They were emotional in here afterwards. I’m just super proud of the kids,” adds Paddock.
Talbert led a trio of Panthers in double figure scoring with 16 points. Edwards scored 11 points and Reitz contributed 10 points, four assists and three steals.

Three C-S wrestlers look forward
to individual state finals
By Bruce Rolfe
Three members of the Climax-Scotts wrestling team are looking forward to their first trip to the Individual State Finals March 6 & 7 at Ford Field.
Sophomore Gixxer Glair (175-pound weight class), senior Malcolm Smith (215) and junior Cooper Dinse (285) all earned top four finishes at the Individual Regionals to qualify for the Individual State Finals.
Blair placed first at the individual regionals with a 3-0 record, Smith placed second with a 2-1 record and Dinse (285) placed fourth with a 2-2 record.
The top eight finishers in each weight class earn All-State medals at the Individual State Finals.
All three Panthers recognize the competition will be stronger but embrace the challenge.
Blair, the No. 1 seed in his region, will bring a 36-3 record into the state finals.
His first round opponent will be Michigan Lutheran Seminary freshman Elliott Wakefield, who sports a 42-12 record, in the opening round. Wakefield is the No. 4 seed in his region.
“I really do like seeing better competition, but I feel pretty confident going into the tournament, especially coming out of the districts and getting first and coming out of the regionals and getting first and going into the state tournament as the number one seed from our region, so I feel pretty confident in general,” said Blair.
Smith, who will bring a 41-3 record into the individual state finals, enters as the number two seed from his region.
He will face Vassar sophomore Nic Folino, the No. 3 seed in the region. Folino will bring a 25-11 record into the state finals.
One wrestler who is also a state qualifier that Smith has lost to in the individual district and individual regionals he hopes to get another shot at, is Reading junior Isaac Westfall.
Smith lost to Westfall in the individual district championship match 9-2 and by a 9-0 decision in the regional championship match.
Smith said the two losses to Westfall brings extra motivation if there is a rematch at the State Finals.
“I would love to get a rematch with him. To beat him would be something, especially at the State (Finals),” said Smith.
Dinse, the No. 4 seed in the region, will take a 29-7 into the individual state finals. He will face Charlevoix senior Sawyer Blaszczyk, the No. 1 seed in his region, in the first round. Blaszczyk sports a 46-2 record.
“I’ll go out there and wrestle my best. Just go out there and take it one match at a time,” said Dinse.
All three wrestlers were a part of the Climax-Scotts-Martin co-op wrestling team that advanced to the Team State Finals last year when the team wrestled in the state championship match, so they have experienced the bigger venue moment.
But C-S coach Jason Wade said it will be natural to have some nervousness, especially since it will be their first trip to the Individual State Finals.
“For all three of them, it’s their first time going (to the individual state finals) individually. I’m excited for them. It’s a moment they will never forget. I just talk to them about enjoying it. They do this awesome thing called the grand march where all the wrestlers march around the arena and the crowd’s cheering. Take that all in and enjoy that part of it.
The biggest thing is to be relaxed. It’s a big stage, a big venue. Lots of wrestlers there but it’s just a wrestling match. You’re wrestling a kid that’s coming from a small school just like ourselves,” observed Wade.
Wade just hopes the three C-S wrestlers take it all in and wrestle the way they did to get to this point.
“Just stay within yourself. There’s not some big move, some big secret to going out there. It’s hammering the basics and control positions. That’s what we’ve been really focusing on. Just keep doing what they’re doing. They’ve been doing fine all year. Just trying to keep their minds right, believing in themselves,” adds the C-S coach.

St. Phil captures district championship
with win over C-S
While the Climax-Scotts boys varsity basketball team was efficient for most of the two overtimes, missed opportunities, especially at the free throw line in regulation, factored into a 67-59 double overtime loss to Battle Creek St. Philip in the district championship game February 27 at C-S Jr./Sr. High School.
The Panthers complete the season with a 7-15 record. St. Philip will take a 15-8 record into the regional semifinal March 3 at Marcellus against Lawrence.
The Panthers were 7-for-10 at the free throw line in the two overtime sessions. However C-S was 10-for-20 at the free throw line during regulation.
The free throw shooting performance comes after C-S made 24-of-34 free throws in the district semifinal win over Marshall Academy.
“We talk about that quite often. The kids shoot free throws after practices when they’re tired and stuff like that. And sometimes it just doesn’t fall for you,” said C-S coach Kenny Sattler.
St. Phil was 9-for-12 at the free throw line in the two overtimes and 20-for-25 overall.
Both teams had opportunities to take a lead late in the fourth quarter.
Lincoln Dzwik gave the Tigers a 48-47 lead with a basket down low with 2:08 left in the fourth quarter.
C-S’ Maddox Wyman split a pair of free throws with 1:47 left in the fourth quarter to tie the game, however both teams could not muster another point, sending the game into overtime.
C-S turned the ball over twice over the final 1:47 and St. Phil was 0-for-3 from the floor and had one turnover down the stretch.
A free throw by Nyle Sattler with 1:54 left in the first overtime and two more free throws by Dane Sattler with 26.6 seconds left gave C-S a 51-48 lead.
A three-point basket by Jackson Dzwik with 11 seconds left in the first overtime tied the game, followed by a C-S turnover and a missed St. Phil basket sent the game into a second overtime.
Jackson Dzwik opened the scoring in the 4:00 second overtime with a basket five seconds into the second extra session. Liam LaSala tied the game with two free throws with 3:40 left in the second overtime.
A basket by Jackson Dzwik with 3:20 left gave St. Phil a 55-53 lead, a lead the Tigers would not relinquish.
The Tiger senior dropped in a three-point basket with 1:22 left, giving the visitors a 58-53 lead.
An intentional foul call on C-S with 54.9 seconds left sent the Tigers back to the free throw line. Jackson Dzwik split a pair of free throws, however St. Phil retained possession from the intentional foul call.
Desperate to get the ball, C-S fouled with 49.8 seconds left.
St. Phil’s Carter Dzwik sank two free throws, extending the St. Phil lead to 61-53.
Dane Sattler split a pair of free throws with 45.4 seconds left and Alex Wurtzel split a pair of free throws with 40.3 seconds left pulling C-S to within 61-55.
St. Phil made 6-of-8 free throws the rest of the second overtime to secure the win.
C-S started the game strong, pulling in front 11-3 on a Liam LaSala basket with 2:57 left in the opening quarter before settling for a 12-5 lead after one quarter.
A three-point basket by Dane Sattler with 2:47 left in the second quarter gave C-S a 24-15 lead, however the Tigers closed strong with an 8-0 run for a 24-23 halftime deficit.
The entire third quarter was close. A Lincoln Dzwik basket with 7:15 left gave the Tigers a 27-24 lead, the visitors’ largest lead of the stanza. Dane Sattler’s basket on a drive through the lane with 5:06 left gave C-S its largest lead of the quarter, 30-27.
C-S settled for a 38-37 lead after three quarters.
A basket by Liam LaSala down low with 5:05 left in the fourth quarter gave C-S a 45-39 lead.
A Lincoln Dzwik basket with 2:08 left in regulation capped a 7-2 run and gave the Tigers a 48-47 lead.
Maddox Wyman split a pair of free throws with 1:47 left, knotted the game at 48-48 and sent the game into overtime.
The Tigers defeated C-S 69-51 and 47-41 during the regular season.
C-S shot a cool 31 percent overall from the floor including 21 percent (4-19) from the three-point line and 36 percent (15-42) from two-point range.
St. Phil dropped in 7-of-25 (28 percent) three-point attempts and 28 percent (13-46) two-point attempts for an overall floor shooting percentage of 28 percent (20-71).
Based on how his team had been playing that led to a three-game winning streak leading into the district championship game, Sattler was optimistic.
“As far as the group goes, the last couple weeks, I think that we’ve come together, really, really well. And that’s just the buy-in from every single kid. We put a little streak together there to finish up. The competition level tonight was as high as I’ve ever seen it for this group. I can’t be more proud of them in what they achieved, and the game that they played,” said the C-S coach.
Dane Sattler finished with 20 points to lead C-S in scoring. Liam LaSala added 10 points and Wyman and Tye Chambers each scored nine points.
The Dzwik brothers combined for 58 of St. Phil’s 67 points, with Jackson Dzwik dropping in 25 points, Carter Dzwik 21 and Lincoln Dzwik adding 12.
Seniors Tye Chambers and Liam LaSala played in their final games.
“The seniors need a ton of recognition. We are so proud of them. We are so thankful for them. That’s two dudes that really put it all on the line tonight and throughout the season and competed really hard,” said Sattler.
