Lady Rams fall in district
semifinals to Parchment

By Dale Martin

Turnovers and cold shooting in the fourth quarter were big factors in a 50-47 loss to Parchment in the district semifinals for the Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team at Saranac March 4.

The Lady Rams finish the season with a 12-10 record.

G-A jumped out to a 12-3 lead and held onto the lead entering the second quarter despite a surge by Parchment that pulled the Panthers to within 18-16 after one quarter.

Two three-point baskets by Grace Gibson and one by Rayonna Alexander accounted for nine of G-A’s first 15 points.

Parchment outscored G-A 14-10 in the second quarter to take a 30-28 halftime lead.

G-A’s 17 turnovers in the first half reduced offensive possessions and allowed the Panthers to stay close before finally overtaking G-A at halftime.

The Rams reversed their turnover problems in the third quarter, playing through the stanza without any miscues. That helped G-A to a 45-35 lead after three quarters.

G-A scored the first five points of the third quarter and the final nine to build the lead to double digits (45-35).

The majority of G-A’s offense in the third quarter came at the free throw line, where the Rams meshed 11-of-16 free throws.

G-A went scoreless the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, and Parchment responded to the cold shooting stretch with an 11-0 run to take a 46-45 lead.

G-A retook the lead 47-46 but did not score the rest of the game.

G-A committed six turnovers in the fourth quarter with five miscues coming in the final three minutes.

Parchment enjoyed a strong night under the boards at both ends of the floor.

G-A struggled with its floor shooting, making 10-of-37 two-point attempts (27 percent) and 3-of-13 three-point tries (23 percent) for an overall percentage of 26 percent.

Senior Grace Gibson finished with 16 points, six rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot to pace G-A.
