C-S advances to district championship
game with win over Bellevue
The win sent C-S into the district championship game March 6 against Battle Creek St. Philip.
C-S got off to a slow start, moving in front 7-3 after one quarter.
However a strong second quarter helped the Panthers pull away for their third win of the season over the Broncos.
The Lady Panthers defeated Bellevue twice during the regular season, 53-9 and 51-13.
Freshman Alyse Langs, who knocked down a pair of three-point baskets, scored 12 points in the second quarter and senior Holly Talbert, who connected on two triples, also scored 12 points in the stanza, helping the Panthers pull away for a 37-9 halftime cushion.
While the C-S defense was shining by holding Bellevue without a point in the third quarter, junior Kendal Reitz flourished at the offensive end by scoring eight points to help the Panthers to a 49-9 lead after three quarters.
Annabelle Edwards established her presence under the boards with 10 rebounds.
Reitz was a distributor and a scoring threat, finishing with 14 points and six assists.
Leading scorer Holly Talbert was also effective offensively, scoring 15 points.
Langs, who was 2-for-4 from the three-point line, also scored 15 points.

Lady Panthers’ season ends with 41-20
setback in regional semifinal game
C-S finishes the season with a 16-7 overall record.
Portland St. Patrick (20-5) faced Muskegon Catholic Central in the regional championship game March 11.
Three-point baskets by Alyse Langs and Holly Talbert in the first quarter helped C-S stay close early, but the Shamrocks enjoyed a 13-7 lead after one quarter.
The Panther offense sputtered in the second quarter, with an Annabelle Edwards basket and free throw accounting for all the offense C-S could generate, resulting in a 26-10 halftime deficit for the Lady Panthers.
C-S continued to struggle at the offensive end in the third quarter as well. Holly Talbert’s basket was the only scoring of the quarter for C-S and the Shamrocks took a 35-12 lead into the fourth quarter.
C-S outscored St. Patrick 8-6 in the fourth quarter with Kendal Reitz scoring four of C-S’ points in the stanza.
Talbert’s five points led C-S in scoring. Annabelle Edwards, Addy Reeves, and Sophie Braithwaite each pulled down four rebounds and Talbert had three assists and three steals.
Seniors playing in their final games were Adalynn Reeves, Holly Talbert, Ashlynn Gilbert, Chloe Czuk and Sophie Braithwaite.

Girls basketball team wins
2nd straight district championship
It’s been no secret Climax-Scotts girls varsity basketball coach Chip Paddock and his team has felt all season the post season could be a special time for the Panthers.
C-S took a big first step with a 50-36 win over Battle Creek St. Philip March 6 in the district championship game played at Martin.
The 17-6 Panthers, who won a district championship last year before falling in the regional championship game with most of the roster returning this season, faced Portland St. Patrick in the regional semifinal game at Fowler March 9.
The game was close for most of the contest, however C-S’ defense, rebounding and ability to get to the free throw line in the second half were big factors in Paddock’s mind.
A Mylee Grimm basket for St. Phil with 5:52 left in the fourth quarter pulled the Tigers to within 39-34.
However C-S held St. Phil without a point for just over 5:00 and built a 46-34 lead before the Tigers finally ended the drought with a basket with 44.1 seconds left.
C-S was 12-for-16 at the free throw line in the second half.
“When we talked at halftime, they were killing us on the boards. Credit to St. Phil. They’re an amazing team and coached well. They’ve just got great kids. They were beating us up on the boards. The message at halftime is we’ve got to get on it on the glass and just keep people in front of us. Defensively, they were opening up our hips a little bit and getting down hill.
As a result, we were fouling and giving up free throws. Super proud of the changes we made at halftime,” said the C-S coach.
St. Phil led just three times in the game, all in the first quarter.
A basket by Addi Dzwik with 1:33 left in the first quarter gave the Tigers a 7-6, however that would be the last advantage St. Phil would enjoy.
Kendal Reitz ended the quarter with two baskets, including one with 0.5 seconds left to give C-S a 10-7 lead after one quarter.
A basket down low by Annabelle Edwards on a nice pass from Addy Reeves gave C-S its largest lead of the first half, 19-11.
The Lady Panthers settled for a 24-20 lead at halftime after Dzwik split a pair of free throws with 2.6 seconds left in the second quarter.
C-S enjoyed its first double digit lead with 3:33 left in the third quarter when Kendal Reitz split a pair of free throws for a 33-23 advantage.
St. Phil reduced the deficit to 35-28 when Quin Dzwik split a pair of free throws with 57.2 seconds left, however Holly Talbert sent C-S into the final quarter with a 37-28 lead by making a basket with 13 seconds left.
The Lady Panthers also defeated St. Phil twice earlier in the season, 45-36 and 42-29.
Reitz finished with a game high 20 points to go with six rebounds and three steals and Edwards paired 17 points with seven rebounds.

After losing to Reading junior Isaac Westfall in the individual district championship match (9-2) and the individual regional championship match (9-0), Smith was hoping for a rematch at the State Finals.
It came in what turned out to be his next to last match.
While the C-S senior kept the score close, he fell short 3-0 against Westfall and settled for a chance to wrestle for a fifth place finish.
Smith lost to McBain senior Wyatt Zuiderveen by an injury default in 4:10 in the fifth and sixth place match.
Smith finishes the season with a 44-6 record.
Smith began the tournament with a pin over Vassar sophomore Nic Folino in 45 seconds.

The C-S junior rebounded to win his second round match over Capac junior Kaleb Pietrzak by a pin in 52 seconds.
